So, after a recent Tuna talk thread and repeated MgTower Simpsons fish pics in regards to Fukishima along with Homeschooled’s Kipper conversion I have decided to give them a try. Even though I am an American I am a huge fan of British culture and comedy, Fawlty Towers, Mr. Bean, Benny Hill, all very dear to me. Kippers however have eluded me thus far. My question is; which brand is your favorite and what do you like to serve them on or with? Also, not even sure if Kippers is just a British thing, so everyone please chime in here.

I totally enjoy Kippers on most kinds of snack crackers (the oval type), I use two small table forks and lift small pieces out of the container and onto the crackers. I tend to prefer Kippers over most sardines, although the mustard type sardines are also good on plain saltine crackers. Kippers seem milder in flavor compared to sardines. I have been buying two brands .. they vary slightly in texture and flavor .. but all are good and I’d just suggest buying one tin of each of the two or possibly three brands (if available) offered by some stores. The places I go to sometimes only have one label available .. selection here is limited. Remember to get a box of snack crackers also. Kippers really go well with a slightly acidic drink .. lemonade .. or sometimes I even add a Tea+Lemonade 16oz energy drink. Kippers on crackers aren’t really fishy as sardines would be, rather, having a smoked flavor .. some really mild almost leaning in the direction of spiced chicken.

    Thanks for the laugh tower.
They are eating what we in
Texas and Oklahoma call Fish bait.

THIS IS AN OKLAHOMA KIPPER SNACK!
CAUGHT WITH BARE HANDS BY MY HEAVENLY FATHER.

I was bound to be misunderstood, and I laugh at those who misunderstand me. Kind mockery at the well intentioned, but unfettered cruelty towards those would be prison guards of my creative possibilities. This so as to learn as much from misunderstanding as from understanding. Taking pleasure in worthy opponents and making language fluid and flowing like a river yet pointed and precise as a dagger. Contradicts the socialistic purpose of language and makes for a wonderful linguistic dance, A verbal martial art with constant parries that hone the weapon that is the two edged sword of my mouth.

Kippers proper are cold smoked partial cure split gutted headless herring.

Bloaters are cold smoked partial cure whole unsplit ungutted herring. Also known as Yarmouth capon, Two-eyed steak, Billingsgate pheasant.

There is also Red herring which is cold smoked full cure.

Buckling is hot smoked partial cure whole unsplit gutted headless herring.

    You did ask …

The best Kippers are Manx kippers

The Isle of Man is a very small Island in the Irish Sea.

lol Sardines are like that, minus the guts. The Kippers I just bought, I think Homeschooled said he liked are from Germany, the brand is Polar. It is just smoked fillets in a can. Also, I have seen sardines with no guts/heads/fins, I do think they all have the skins and scales though, you can see dudes on Youtube doing reviews…

In canned kippers for the one you like best it is a bit of trial and error. Crown Prince and Brunswick are in local stores the kind I get most of the time. Have ordered on line some that were by the time shipping and all added in just over 5 bucks a tin. Not better then the C.P. My fav is Appel, but not many local stores stock them.
You can make your own,…Herring is an oily fish. Mullet work well if you can not get herring. Just look around youtube, I am sure a few people have put up how they do it.

I like the microwaveable kipper fillets that come in the plastic bags with a little bit of butter in them; supermarkets don’t stock them that much, though.
