The Alcubierre drive or Alcubierre warp drive (or Alcubierre metric, referring to metric tensor) is a speculative idea based on a solution of Einstein’s field equations in general relativity as proposed by Mexican theoretical physicist Miguel Alcubierre, by which a spacecraft could achieve apparent faster-than-light travel if a configurable energy-density field lower than that of vacuum (that is, negative mass) could be created.

Rather than exceeding the speed of light within a local reference frame, a spacecraft would traverse distances by contracting space in front of it and expanding space behind it, resulting in effective faster-than-light travel. Objects cannot accelerate to the speed of light within normal spacetime; instead, the Alcubierre drive shifts space around an object so that the object would arrive at its destination faster than light would in normal space without breaking any physical laws.

Bending spacetime would take a lot of energy…Unless we find some exotic laws or material in the fourth dimension which might shed some light on the feasibility of such a drive. This would entail string theory which is pretty much still a theory…

One thing I could not grasp or visualize though is 4 dimensions…A square is equilateral in 2D, a cube is equilateral in 3D while a tesseract has equal sides in 4D…I can see pictures of tessaract, but my mind could not visualize the 4th dimension…A cube is a shadow of the tessaract much the same as a square is a shadow of a cube…

At some point they will figure out how to bend space-time nearly continuously using infinitely small intervals. By continuously, I mean in the same mathematical sense as compounding interest continuously. That would require the smallest amount of energy.
