So, being separated has taken it’s toll for the first time on me tax-wise. As I don’t have custody, the child credits all go to the ex. All my deductions withheld at source were based on the entire family unit including the kids. Now all I got was the basic deduction. As a single guy with no dependents, I file 2 on my W-2 and never file federal or state income taxes since, as of around 10 years ago, I break even as do they. The state filing specifically says, “if you file federal you must file state.” My state is a “sanctuary STATE”, if you can believe that s~~~, so they can go f~~~ themselves. I keep hearing how people who claim zero and single will sometimes still pay state taxes and the fact that the feds will cut this state off….
