Here is the tax brackets back in 1954 in the United States. There have been 4 major income tax codes: 1913, 1939, 1954, and the current code, 1986.

If you were married and made over $300,000 you paid about $230k in tax plus 91% of your income over $300k. Capital gain were taxed at 25%. So on a $300k salary, you had about $70k left over. Oh yeah, you haven’t paid your state taxes yet either……

This is what idiots like that woman want to go back to. To her credit, it’s been done before. She just wants to go back in time. Although I’m sure her idea of rich is just above what she thinks she’ll ever make in her life. There are a lot of people like her that throw the logic around that we had a much better economy back then when we paid a s~~~ load more tax. Of course they are completely discounting the Great Depression and WWII. Or maybe they want the Greater Depression and WWIII..

EDIT: Also note how high the taxes were on EVERYONE. Right now almost half of the people in the US pay no income tax. Everyone paid more back then. I don’t think she’d like how much more she would have to pay in under a system like that.

If they sold the 80% tax as only taxing wealthy foreigners whom make money at the expense of the American people, the tax could gain political traction for support by the American people. Therein lies the rub. As someone from outside of America I’ve always wondered what the real circumstances around a 91% tax rate was. It just doesn’t sound right. I think I’ll have to look up the whole picture someday around that claim. Were there any social services or welfare of significance then? etc.

You wouldn’t be able to live well on that now. The amount of work required to make $300 would be brutal in many circumstances and with a brutal work schedule 70k would barely keep a family going.

When dual income families started to become the norm, property values skyrocketed. Many people ended up paying $500,000 or more for something “cute”. That’s an inflationary tax right there. It’s tough for a family to get by on 70 grand a year these days. I don’t know how these kids do it. And this bitch is proposing an 80% tax? That’s why she’s not a politician. I gave you a link to the tax rates. As far as spending goes, I think we were mostly paying for the New Deal and WWII. Back then we didn’t run a deficit like we do now. That really only came in with 80’s under Reagan and has exploded since then.

The fall of every major empire came because they expanded their power and reach beyond their means and conducted their affairs poorly. The US takes in less money than it spends – which the only way for a government to have money in the first place is to tax people. The government doesn’t make money. It costs money.

She wants to take take take from rich people to put into government, but look how ineffective the government is at running various aspects of itself. I know we have some vets here. On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate the effectiveness of the Veterans Affairs department when it comes to getting you health care?

I know there’s a majority of veterans who would score the VA in low numbers.
