Here, the dominant religion is Christianity, which in some large denominations — e.g. Catholicism, and more conservative Christian denominations, official teachings, forbid masturbation, as does traditional Judaism. Certainly many other Christian denominations do not forbid it. The reasons why some forbid and others do not are complex and often historical; for instance, in Catholicism, the prohibition occurred only hundreds of years into the religion. In the case of Judaism, it was based on Onan. The reality is, MOST men and women do it. Typically, men do it more frequently.

I would also say there is much less tolerance for pornography amongst the various Christian denominations, than there is for masturbation. So it’s useful to draw a distinction between the two, which I also didn’t do in my first post.

Having seen more than one man get re-married to have the Authorization for Sex, I can attest that these various prohibitions DO impact behavior of some men in these denominations.
