I was once targeted for recruitment by a sperm bank when it left flyers in the student mail boxes of all the male medical students. I suppose they figured we were poor and needed the money, and by offering us as medical students, they could promise prospective buyers that at least we were smart enough to get into medical school.
I had an issue about the process though. I talked to a male classmate who followed up on it and he related that there were all sorts of personal and medical questions about him and his background, but when he asked the bank about he prospective recipients, he was told he’d have no knowledge of, or influence over who would receive his sperm. He had the same issue I had: who the hell was going to be raising his biological offspring?
It is illegal to buy and sell a person. This is human trafficking/slavery and it’s rightfully outlawed everywhere for obvious reasons. But paid organ donation is also illegal here for similar reasons. Paying a live donor for a kidney for example, is pretty strictly forbidden, and it’s also for good reason. There is enormous potential for abuse, any laws to regulate it would be difficult to enforce and easy to circumvent. Some argue that making it a business borders on cannibalism. That may be a reach. But what is not a reach is that if you make anything a for-profit business, it’s only a mater of a short time before that business will be using its profits to lobby government to pass laws in its favor. So, we don’t really want to go there…
So why then is it legal to buy and sell sperm? The buyer can have all kinds of say over what they are buying. The buyer couple in this article (both women I’ll assume lesbians) were upset that the picture of the donor had a mole photoshopped from it and they weren’t told he had a history of mental illness.
Fair enough. But I’ve seen mentally ill people do horrific things to their children. Why as a donor do I not get proof that my recipient is not an abusive nutbag monster? Buyer wants proof that I am caucasian, healthy and intelligent? Fine. I want proof that she has no history of hating men, being mentally ill, carrying a genetic disease of her own, or generally behaving like a bitch.
Why would I be any less discerning about the recipient of my sperm who acquired it from a sperm bank than I am about the recipient that I chose to have a relationship with and give it to personally. In the course of that relationship, a woman would have to jump through a great many hoops to prove to me that she was going to be a good mother. Why should two lesbians at sperm bank not have that same burden of proving themselves worthy?
I wouldn’t donate even if they did offer to pay me. I’d tell them to keep their money and demand the sperm bank prove the recipient is healthy and that she is going to be a good mother. Among other things, I define a good mother as one who does not deprive a child of their father.
You think women get p~~~ed when you tell them you’re not providing any more free dinners and drinks? Imagine the fireworks if they ever heard, ‘you are not deemed worthy to reproduce…no sperm for you…’. It’s a horrific sounding statement…until you flip it and realize that men hear that message all the time because they don’t make enough money, are not tall enough, smart enough, funny enough etc etc…
