Had to get my a/c working today for my animals, they cant tolerate heat well.
Got a new cooling/misting system for the condenser unit that mists the air around it, cooling it down, so it doesnt have to work so hard/long to cool down the house.
To do this, had to finally fix a leaky outdoor faucet that would leak through the stem with the water turned on. Problem was its a 60 gear old faucet that had no screw in it to remove the handle and stem to replace the packing.
Well, using a dremel i cut enough into the metal holding in the handle, got it square enough, and was able to get the handle off. Turns out it was a steel screw but it was rusted so much the entire head was flat and you couldnt tell it was a screw head at all.
No big box stores sell the repacking needed. I found a good plumbing place that does. He let me work the screw out of the stem in case it broke. A little torch heat and some wd40, and gentle rocking back and forth, and I got the old screw out.
The guy there then proceeded to find the right packing washer and after resizing it a bit, and of course removing all the old packing and cleaning it out, put the new packing in and got me on my way.
Got home, put teflon tape on the threads and reinstalled it, having to tweak it a couple times , but now, no more leaky faucet. Put on a Y adapter for two hose lines each with their own really nice ball shutoff valves. One line is for the a/c cooling system and the other will be for the regular hose. After i hosed down the condenser coils (which were hardly dirty, i did it before winter and before imput the cover over it for the winter), then installed all the misting hoses, cleared their lines of any potential debris, installed the brass misting heads, lightly tie wrapped down the lines to secure them in place and got it all working.
Air conditioner itself is working well, temps at the a-coil and vents are where they are supposed to be, upper 40s to low 50s, at least for my system thats normal and tells me right now my refrigerant levels are good. Got drainage from the drip line so no blockages or water buildup in the a-coil housing, so thats good.
Took all afternoon to do it right and careful and safely, but its done and my guys are nice and cool and not overheating. Tired and my hands hurt, but feel good.

Anonymous42Sounds like you didn’t kink or strip anything! I hate when that happens! 10 minute job turns to 4 hrs, and that’s after you throw your tool box at it!

Yeah, for me personally, I estimate how much time I need, then I triple it. And thats about right to deal with extra trips, unexpected things and just trying to take extra time to do it carefully as to not create new problems for myself.
