When do you know that enough is enough?
I go through the paces of daily doldrum, and one day/week/month/year just blends into the next. I just get older, and yet I keep going through the daily grind. I may stop here and there for a little treat of various kinds, but then I jump right back on the hamster wheel yet again. It’s ALL IN VAIN.
I was talking with an acquaintance of mine and he was mentioning a couple/few older Men that have no desire to retire. They both have “good” jobs, and have earned plenty of resources to retire. Yet, they refuse to step off the damn hamster wheel. They claim to “enjoy” their work etc., but it’s not like they are anything more than corporate drones doing worker bee activities for corporate America.
Many have just NEVER had a LIFE, and they have no idea what they would do with THEIR TIME and LIFE if they actually CHOSE TO TAKE IT. Their precious ego’s won’t be getting stroked.. The company trips and expense accounts will all go away.
ALL they will be left with is THEIR TIME and THEIR CURRENT GOOD HEALTH, and a ton of resources…..and yet they shall probably plug along until they run out of some combination of health and/or time.
Well at least they will be able to afford a top notch nursing home in exchange for THEIR LIFE that they invested in their retirement accounts……Let’s see there’s not much ego stroking or corporate perks in nursing homes either……
I really have NO DESIRE to work doing ANYTHING ANY LONGER THAN I MUST.
Even now, I question how much longer can I put up with my BULS~~~ JOB before the tread mill starts going faster than I WANT to run.
I Care LESS and LESS about MORE and MORE DAILY !!!!!!

Anonymous38Of course those men don’t want to retire. They know how hellish their lives will be being always at home, bringing in no more money.
What would you do if money was no object? I mean really do with your life. I know what I’d do, and it doesn’t involve working unless it was for a cause I cared for. It involves lots of time for contemplation, learning, just relaxing, In the environment of my choosing.
Far away from the artificial and the contrived. From liars, fakes, decepticons. Free to do as I please for 99% of the time. Exactly the opppsite of what the MATRIX wants. Bliss.
Men, do not chain yourself to anyone or anything that means you can’t go your own way ALL the way.
What do you REALLY want to do with your life Awakened? Most men don’t know. They have never been given the choice. So what do you do?
Some men work all their lives just to die.
What other choice have the been given? They are in fact, doing what they want. But only since they don’t know any better. And that’s all it is.
1979 – 2019 That’s 40 years. My Birthday is on March 11. And, I will be 40 years old. I’ve only lived as an adult for about 30. But I have been working since I was 12 years old. Do you know what I found out? Just knowing you are turning 40 years old make you think about things.
Do you know what I don’t feel? I don’t feel 40. Want to know why? I don’t think about. WHen I look in the mirror, I don’t see a 40 year old guy.
I see a man who’d life is just getting started. I see a world where I am going to be able to change it as I wish.
And you know what? If I died tomorrow, I would be fine. Why? Cuz I did the impossible. I never grew up.
Never grow up. When you forget the wonder, you forget what life is about.

Anonymous38They have never been given the choice.
We have always had the choice. We must take responsibility for our choices which have led us to where we are today.
Choosing to GYOW fully takes real courage.
A lot of guys don’t retire because they don’t want to be around their old lady back at home! On the other hand, a lot of guys who retire without having developed any interests or even considered what they really want to do end up checking out relatively quickly.
We just don't realize life's most significant events while they're happening. Back then, I thought, "Well, there'll be other days". I didn't realize that that was the only day. - "Moonlight" Graham
We have always had the choice.
At what cost. So few remember what the choices were back then. And chances are, there is no choice that they can see.
Sure, we can say they had a choice. But in reality, did they?

I don’t care what else is said. THIS IS THE ANSWER. And we ALL KNOW IT.

Some years ago, I was walking along the bank of a large lake on a cool Spring day. I had bought a new car a few weeks prior, and was out driving to nowhere in particular to break in the car. I got tired of driving so I stopped by this beautiful lake.
I walked about 1/2 mile when I came across the elder gentlemaan walking aimlessly toward me. I said Helloas he walked by and we started a small conversation. It turns out he was newly retired and had no idea of what to do with his life having worked as a driver 35yrs for a large, local trucking company. He said he had wanted to buy a small boat and go fishing.
Just then another older gentleman came toward us from the parking area. He said he couldn’t help but over hear that this guy was looking for a small “John-boat.” He was selling one since he never uses it and while chatting further we found out he had just retired as well.
Long story short: The 2 older gentlemen worked for the same company for yrs barely 100ft from each other, although at different times of day. The first man drove in the morning, never seeing anything but his truck and a loading dock. The 2nd gentleman was a shipping supervisor working 2nd shift directing teams to load the trucks in the dock. THEY NEVER MET until that cool day on the edge of the lake. They worked their whole careers for others and didn’t evn have a life of their own. They were “Institutionalised”
Now, they are fishing buddies, and do chit/go places with each other.
Made me wonder: Was it fate that made me stop there that particular day??

This.
The wife doesn’t want you home. She retired decades ago and is a pro at it. She doesn’t want some newbie around under her foot. I remember when my grandparents died and I was talking to my uncle. He said the toughest time in their marriage was when grandpa retired. Grandma didn’t work. She had her bridge games with her friends, hair appointments every couple weeks, she had it down. She didn’t need or want him around her all the time. Things got better when he found a few hobbies that took in out in the garage for most of the day. He busted his ass for decades dreaming about retiring and spending time with the one he loved, only to find out he wasn’t wanted there. That got to be a kick in the b~~~~. So I think many of those guys continue to work because they know they aren’t wanted at home. But you can’t say that, so you make up some bulls~~~ excuse.
And as far as hobbies go, he probably hasn’t been given the time to develop any. I know some guys that have many hobbies, even married guys. They will probably have a much happier retirement. But if you don’t have those hobbies developed by then, well good luck buddy. You’re gonna need it.
Personally, when I retire I think I’ll continue to teach continuing education classes to CPA’s. They need 40 hours a year to keep their license. You can charge a couple hundred dollars for a couple hour class. If you have 25 people in your class, it’s a quick $5k. Now you have to spend some time keeping up and making sure your class is relevant, but teach on every couple months and you make an extra $30k or so a year in “retirement”. Enough to fund a whole lot of fun the rest of your time.
Order the good wine

Is that any way for a MAN to live??

Old age arrives overnight, I saw it happen to my relatives .. like they say “in the blink of an eye”
.. all of a sudden when someone needs assistance for whatever reason, age, disease or broken hip recovery .. whatever
that assistance is offered .. but for a price, you sign the papers … they take it all .. everything!
… and those places aren’t fun
the first thing they hand you when you sign up someone for nursing home is a large bulging folder of rules and
.. a long essay on communal living and how giving up privacy and many of the habits and ways you were used to .. they are gone. The next thing they do .. if your relative who is being admitted is still mobile and walking .. they strap a device permanently to his ankle so he can’t wander.
He is a prisoner and limited to wandering the hallways.
… and here is the big one “and I literally cried over this when I saw it” .. there are no chairs in that facility with headrests .. think about this for a minute .. in the rooms, in the lobby or lounge of that fancy highly recommended nursing facility costing hundreds of dollars a day .. not a single chair with a place to lean back and rest your head. If the need to rest the head .. they have to nod forward and sit that way. They have plenty of straight back padded chairs, high back with arm rests .. but don’t provide any design for leaning your head back. This is for easier sitting and standing .. straight back chairs .. even in the patients rooms. The only chair with a headrest in entire facility was tilted back high wheelchair for those who were paralyzed or in some form of treatment.
… unless you buy your own recliner with headrest and have it delivered .. “with their permission”. … and always a reminder, I owe them another check for $2,500.00 for four days care .. until his other forms of auto-withdrawn and payment begin.
When I saw this I called the director of the home and told her I’m discharging my Dad and taking him home .. today, this afternoon .. now!!! they knew I was mad so they didn’t want bad publicity .. I could tell. They still made me jump through hoops… evil .. I took continuous care of my Dad from that day forward .. with certain meal and care assistance from others .. in his own home where he wanted to live. Even had video cameras with vox installed in several rooms, with his blessing, to be able to monitor his safety wherever I might be. I could see him and talk to him while mowing my lawn, shopping for groceries .. anywhere. He also had back up generator for complete comfort in any event. I took him to all his appointments.
She said they needed to discharge him after certain required tests .. I sat with him and waited as they had him walk, sit and stand and get into and out of a bed to prove he could leave.
… live your life now, this week, this month, this year .. your own way .. avoid nursing home hell … and they take everything .. everything!! everything you have when you go in or will ever have while you are there is part of the nightmare deal.
I’m never going through old age, never .. I will will myself somehow, to live now and avoid ever setting foot in a place like that again. Ever! I live now .. the best I can.… tonight, I bake myself a favorite pizza .. high calorie, clog my arteries .. three cheese .. and sit back and watch a safe good old comfort movie Woody Allen .. Play it Again Sam .. and quietly thank the Universe for how things eventually evolved for my Dad as he lived comfortably at home with only his own rules .. not theirs.
I’m never going through old age, never .. I will will myself somehow, to live now and avoid ever setting foot in a place like that again. Ever!
I’ve saved my Lou Reed Live album for when it is time to exit.
Lou Reed
I had to think about who this was.
Now tell me something. Look at everyone in this room.
And we WONDER how some people are bat s~~~ crazy today.
Still. Must have been cool growing up back then.
Hard to believe the dude is 71

What do you REALLY want to do with your life Awakened?
I want to sleep until I wake up naturally. I want to get up make my coffee, gym drinks/snacks, pack my bag etc. and head out to the gym. I want to be able to work out as well as socialize and enjoy the Sauna. I want to do it on MY SCHEDULE without having to rush.
I want to go home and enjoy a big fat Breakfast/Brunch, and then play on the computer for a couple/few hours prior to my afternoon snack and power knap for a couple hours.
After waking, I want to go back to the gym for a lil more socializing and my cardio session. I want to go back to MY HOUSE where I can prepare a wonderful dinner and eat like a KING followed by a lil more computer/movie time and fall asleep naturally WITHOUT any concerns that tomorrow will not be anymore troublesome than today.
Rinse and Repeat….Of course there will be Beach days, chores, and project/hobbies as well sprinkled in along the way…..But that’s WHAT I WANT TO DO.
Do ya know anyone Hiring ?? LOL LOL LOL

Yes.
Their ‘job’ defines them. Without it they are nothing. That’s why they cling on so desperately. After retiring many join societies so they can ‘be somebody’ again.
Men in otherwise excellent health who just fade away and die within 1-2 years of retiring is a phenomenon with which doctors are familiar.

That is pretty cool.
Im so young at 33, but smart enough to realize that I cant relate to what it’s like to face the last years of my life. Its one thing to relate to retirement and what all that entails, but 20 years later, that is the nursing home stage…
I hope this doesn’t sound insensitive by my plan, honestly, was to do myself in at around 80 if Im still kicking simply because, what is there to look forward to after that? — descent into incoherence etc… I’d like to go out on my terms, in finality, one clean swoop with no suffering or decline into lunacy or dirty bedpans etc…
I dont consider that sinful or immoral… When Im 80, (and they still don’t have Nano-Bots or Fountains of Youth to replenish telomeres etc…) Im going to just “go for a walk.”
do myself in at around 80
I know a couple Men in the 75 year old range that are in pretty damn good shape. They still workout, and have FULL ACTIVE Lives. Maybe, they’re the exception, but shoot for that.
No Need to Rush the Dirt Knap, but yes I agree I too wish too be gone PRIOR to the whole nursing home/bed pan thing regardless of WHATEVER that age happens to be.
Hopefully, a massive coronary will hit me while some Young lil “professional” Woman is earning her fee!! LOL

Great post and replies, Awakened.
Sadly for me, endless leisure time leads to chronic masturbation in my case. So, I really need hobbies. lol
There was a guy I worked with who was 73 and still worked. Apparently when it was time to retire the previous company he worked for closed down taking his pension with them. So he had to keep working.
But man, I’ve never seen a 73 year old man JUMP UP ON A TABLE like this. He was in awesome shape. I’ve heard he survived a skydiving incident (canopy remained balled up) by aiming for the trees on his way down. Trees broke his fall and he survived.
Anyway, what are we talking about ? lol
Since I as about 20, I’ve always expected to live until I was around 150 or so.
At the time, everyone thought I was crazy.32 years later, it seems quite likely to many people.
Don’t plan for death.
