Ok, my old snow thrower is just over twenty five years old. It’s worked tirelessly through countless storms. The trouble is that so far this winter it’s been dying and there is no way to diagnose the problem. It’s just worn out.
Later this week I’m going to have to go shopping. I need a two or even three stage machine and at least a thirty inch wide intake .. not a luxury but a necessity. I don’t like spending on anything .. but I have absolutely no choice and need something soon.
When the snow-plow turns around he plows to just over one hundred feet from my garage. The driveway is twelve feet wide. Last snow storm along with drifting, I had about two feet deep along the entire drive. Twenty four hundred cubic feet of heavy snow is too much for me to handle with a scoop shovel. I also have lots of other areas that need to be cleaned after a major snowfall and it’s just too difficult. The other thing about shoveling isn’t just the time it takes .. but breathing in all that freezing cold air when the snow is heavy almost burns inside.
I’ve been looking around for awhile and the new snow-throwers seem to be built noticeably lighter weight than my old one. I don’t know how all the new features will stand up .. plastic skid shoes, motorized discharge chute rotation, hand warmers on the grips, lots of other plastic where my old machine had metal. I can just see that motorized chute freezing up.
.. we’ll see after the next storm 🙂

Good luck man, they just don’t make things like they used to. I really don’t like it when they use plastic in high stress locations on the machine too. Hopefully they just used plastic for non-critical parts.

I have family members that live out in the woods and they have long gravel driveways. Every snow, they hire this Amish guy to come and plow the snow off the driveway. If you live somewhat close to any farmers maybe they could provide you with a similar service. Hopefully you won’t need to look though, good luck next storm.

I’m using a rebuilt 45 year old Gravely commercial lawn mower/tractor, EVERYTHING IS STEEL! The shaft driven mowerdeck can split cordwood, and the shaft driven 2 stage snowblower can eat rocks and spit out gravel, it also eats a mixture of water, slush, and snow without clogging, plus it throws the snow up to 75 feet away!

Want a laugh? Grab the new snowblower by it’s opening, and see how far you can twist the body out of square! You’ll swear you’re Superman, bending steel tin, in your bare hands! Plus all that plastic s~~~ all over it everywhere; in time it’ll get brittle and shatter!

That’s why I have two machines, A 1978 John Deere 316 garden tractor with a 48″ blower and a 1986 John Deere 420 garden tractor with a all hydraulic 54″ blade. If one breaks down and I can’t repair it right away I can just hop on the other one.

These are much more fun than shoveling snow.

I’m sick of the cold. It has been around 20 degrees or less for several days. At times, single digits in the morning. It comes right through my walls at home. At work, the building is an old cinder block building an it comes right through the walls there. I do not care for the cold at all. Every winter it gets like this and every winter I want to move.
