I want to invest in silver and I was like hey why not kill two birds with one stone.

Two currencies in one for an apocalypse.

Does Anyone silver investor think this is a good price and idea?

No, buy mint stamped bullion, buy the 10 troy-oz, larger ingots are harder to get rid of, the price actual goes down on larger bars because they’re harder to sell.

If you are going to buy precious metals, purchase at your local coin shop. Current spot price for silver is around $17 U.S.. This neato bullet costs $45.74. This price is 74% over spot value.

Just buy the coin. You don’t need to get in to collecting older, collectable coin. For me this is a waste of time and money.

First download an app for you phone that gives current spot prices for gold and silver.

When purchasing silver coin you have three options.

    1. Silver rounds. These are normally commemorative coins or coins issued by non-governmental mints.
    2. Silver currency. Some people trust these more than silver rounds because the are “legitimate” currency issued by the government.
    3. Silver Bullion. These are bars of various weights. I have found that, online, you payer a higher premium over spot value than you do silver coin.

    Gold

Again buy at a local coin shop. Sometimes it is hard to come by. As an alternative, look for Canadian Maple Leafs online from a reputable reselling agency or from the Canadian Mint. They cost less than gold coins issued by the US Mint.

I just purchased a gold coin from a local coin dealer. Get to know your dealer. They normally deal in cash, or bank draft checks for large purchases. My dealer held on to the coin until my personal check cleared. This is how much trust I have for my dealer and vice versa.

If you want to purchase from a private seller, learn how to calculate the specific gravity of silver and gold. It is quite easy. People will try to take you for a ride, or have been cheated and try to sell it to you. Don’t buy from ebay, facebook, Amazon. You have no way of knowing what you are trying to get and by the time you get these people jailed, your money is long gone. Purchasing directly from a governmental mint is the only way to ensure that you aren’t being cheated in online purchases. However, US Gold currency comes at a premium when purchased directly from the US Mint.

Talk to your coin dealer. He will get to know you and what your wants are. By just telling him you want to invest in the metal and want to avoid paying premiums for appraised coins or antique coins he will come to understand just what your aims are.

    Edit.

One last note. Purchasing fractional weights of gold, i.e. 1/2 oz, 1/10 oz, you will pay a higher premium over spot that for 1 oz and above.

I’m looking at silver as well, if/when currency problems start. I figure for the day-to-day necessities silver’s going to be easier to use (smaller value/denominations, versus gold), so i’ll build up a stockpile of silver first. Gold comes after that, for much larger purchases.

Keep an eye on taxes for purchases at coin dealers & such. I know in NYC if you buy <$1,000 worth of silver you’ll be charged sales tax, but if it’s >$1k worth it’s sales-tax exempt. Not sure where you are, but worth looking in to
