A new study reveals that punitive laws surrounding alcohol use among pregnant women may be rooted in suppressing women’s autonomy, rather than improving public health.

“This finding suggests that a primary goal of pursuing such policies appears to be restricting women’s reproductive rights rather than improving public health,” the study states.

According to the study’s findings, there has been a drastic increase of alcohol and­­­ pregnancy–related policies introduced in the last 40 years. In 1970, not a single such policy existed in the United States. By 2013, only eight states remained free of any pregnancy and drinking–related policies.

As these policies have become more common, they’ve also become far harsher towards women. Dr. Sarah Roberts, one of the study’s four authors and an associate professor at the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco was quite shocked by this fact. “I think the most surprising finding was the fact that policies really are becoming more punitive over time,” she tells Broadly.

In the 1980s, she explains, states generally had policies that were either punitive or supportive. By the 1990s, the trend moved towards mixed environments: those with both types of policies in place.

In recent years, however, even more supportive policy environments have added punitive policies. By 2013, half of states had adopted both types of policy.

So let me see if i can get this straight. Women are now fighting for the right to drink while pregnant, and forget that it can and will harm the baby, they say laws prohibiting this are sexist and hold women down?? These people should not be breeding.

Yes there should be laws about women drinking and/or smoking while pregnant, because they’re carrying a human life inside her, and it’s abusive if she damages that baby.

except she is giving alcohol to a minor child? if life begins at conception, or is she free to drink whatever “my body my choice?”

so many ways this can go. I don’t drink at all, not seeing any real benefit to alcohol. but that is my own way.

I have seen the effects of fetal alcohol syndrome on a child I taught. that girl almost looked normal, but her thought process, capacity for right and wrong and any thing we would call a soul were severely lacking. her mom was drunk at parent conferences ffs. I had someone carry her out to the car, and drive her home.

my opinion on this is, the effects of smoking, drinking and drug use on unborn children is well known, and preventative measures must be taken (cringing here) for the good of the child.

Now that women have thrown men and fathers under the bus, mothers will have no option but to depend on their children to care for them in their old age. Those who don’t responsibly plan for retirement, and instead choose to retard their little retirement plans for a few drinks, will be taken care of by Natural Selection as God intended.

That was my first wife. She was a full blown alcoholic and drank through her pregnancy with my son. I tried everything I could. I wouldn’t allow her in the house when she drank and she went to jail many times but there was no stopping her.

Unfortunate side-effect of the “my body, my choice” argument.

It’s impossible to pin responsibility on women for anything, even killing and maiming children while inside their bodies.
This makes them “not babies” unless they are wanted by the mother.

It’s hard to have morals to guide you when things are twisted and turned upside-down by moral relativism.

I feel sad for our future under this kind of s~~~.
