    DocFenderson:

Several years ago, I attended a function at my alma mater.  Those in attendance either had their engineering degrees or were students.  During the course of the evening, I found myself talking with a group of kids, who, I assume, were recent graduates and several of them were women young enough to be my granddaughters.

The subject of amateur radio came up in the conversation and none of those kids had any idea what it was.  One young lady piped up and asked if it was something like–ahem–a “social network”.  It quickly dawned on me that I couldn’t explain what amateur radio really was in the language of idiots, so I reluctantly nodded and quietly said something like:  “Yeah, sort of….”

If that’s what my alma mater’s engineering school is turning out, we’re doomed as a society.  I knew all about amateur radio when I was in high school, though I could only be a shortwave listener in those days.  It’s a sad reflection on the educational system and the low standards that are now in place if someone with a new engineering degree thinks like that.

Amateur radio is as expensive as one wants to make it.  The first station I set up after I got my callsign cost me about $500 CDN and the most expensive part was a brand-new 2 meter FM transceiver.

There is lots of good quality equipment available on the second-hand market.  There are lots of swap and shop sites on the Internet where hams can place ads to buy or sell something.  Flea markets are another good way to get radio gear.  Find out from a ham or a radio club when the next one is in your area and try to attend.

When I was in grade school there was a kid who lived down the street… his dad was a HAM operator, had a massive antenna in his back yard, must have been over 100ft high… I knew what it was even though I never got a chance to see or hear him use it.

I’ve known about Citizen’s Band and HAM radio since childhood but have only gotten interested in it as I’ve gotten older. I would be tickled pink to see a bunch of MGTOW take up amateur radio ($100 to $500 entry point) and then have someone take out the DNS system and bring the Internet to its knees. I’m not interested in destroying information or anything stupid like that… I just want to see this generation of loser kids having to deal with each other face to face.

    Sue me if that’s evil.
