For the record, Fort Bragg is one of the largest United States Army installations in the world, and is located within Cumberland, Hoke, Harnett and Moore counties, North Carolina. Fort Bragg borders the towns of Fayetteville, Spring Lake and Southern Pines, nowhere near San Fransisco but whatever…

Yes, Fort Bragg is in North Carolina and a very important base at that.

Fort Stewart here in Coastal Georgia is home of the 3rd Infantry Division and the largest military installation East of Mississippi though it’s mostly pine trees and swamp. Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah has the longest runway and sports the largest military airfield East of the Mississippi too is also used by the 3rd ID. These two bases are major assets to the US Army and the 3rd ID. To hear the engines of a fully loaded C-17 on a take off roll is impressive even 3 miles away. I get to see a lot of various military aircraft in flight. I finally saw my very first live F-22 Raptor last week too though those Guard and Air Force fighter guys usually fly out of our civilian airport which has an Air National Guard unit there. The Marine Corp Air station in Beaufort, SC sends pairs of F-18s over my house for bombing practice at a place called the Townsend Bombing Range in the middle of the Georgia woods.

For you non US guys, in the Eastern US open land is so much more scarce than in the the Western US. Fort Stewart also serves as an important refuge for some of our threatened native species here in Georgia as it is not farmed or been turned into tract homes.

When the US deploys en masse, this place turns into a madhouse by rail, highway, air and sea. Yes, too many of the troops wives come out to cheat.

That’s a leftover from the days of the B-36, predecessor to the b-52, they needed 10,000+ foot runways made of concrete 3 ft. thick! A necessity for a Nuclear payload bomber with 6 props, 4 jets, not to mention bad brakes!

We have a VOR (very high frequency omni directional range) outer marker. Yesterday a C-17 banked hard @ 500 AGL standing on his right wing, the jets were deafening as the ground rumbled, sounded like full throttle just having some fun, or he was looking down his wing at a hot chick!

You’re right Tower, it was a SAC base in the 50s and early 60s. Rumor around here is the concrete is 50 feet thick in the touchdown areas. Standing on the tarmac makes you feel very insignificant. When it was an open post, I used to ride my bike around the Perimeter Road. You always had to look out for the incoming aircraft when crossing the runway.

Military planes will fly in from other places in the region and use it for touch and goes it’s so long. The the B-36 was a freaky looking machine. The C-17s will fly over the shopping centers on final approach. They’re so big they look like they’re standing still.

If nuclear war ever happens, I’m going to go hug the fence around it to make sure I’m vaporized. My house is near the edge of the 800kt Topol-M vaporization zone so I want to be 100% sure of instant death.
