    Hello, my unmarried brothers …
I am one of the older members here. I turn 71 in a few months. This topic here, is about Should I get rid of my car?…selling my car, and not buying a new one. Perhaps, I will give it to my older son, with a brand-new tuneup, oil change, brake job and tires, etc., as he is considering buying a new car.
I have two sons. I will pay my other son the money that my car and service jobs and tires etc., are worth.
I only drive about 300 miles per month now. I am not married. The wife died a few years ago. And, I no longer drive to work as I have retired.
I considered getting married again. However, Tom Leykis and MGTOW saved me from that dangerous
    bullet!!
I do not go out on dates with other women. Here in the county I live in Nevada, Prostitution is legal. I can pay a woman that I know very well, and can trust, to come here to my home on occasion.
I can use taxi service, or Uber, to shop twice a month, and get me to my doctor and dentist, twice a year, for a very low price.
Do you guys think I should just unload the car? I did a cost analysis on it. And when I figure in insurance gasoline oil changes depreciation tires, etc. it is costing me about $1.08 a mile. If I don’t have a car I will save $5300 Per year.
I would certainly appreciate your advice and input on this question about unloading my car. Thank you very much in advance.

I vote NO. Don’t give up your independence.

In very large cities like New York and Chicago maybe that works but I think might be an issue in Nevada. My Dad drove until about 10 days before he passed at 95. I’d keep it – compared to my Dad you’re young!

    I agree with Pete.

There is no country for old men. It appears society discards us if we are no longer young. And as you get older most people want to reduce you to a vegetative state.
To compose the problem old people buy into this crap talk of “you are to old to <do something>”. And as a self-fulfilling prophecy, they stop being able to do things for fear and lack of practice.

I say:f~~~ that. Keep driving just because you can and to practice. To stop is to die, not literally, but worst: to die to life!

As for your sons… Think about yourself first. I have seen many families where the sons and daughter’s (especially those) actively reduce old parents mobility, independence and even give bad advises. Their goal is money.

I am not saying its your case, but it is good to keep your independence the most you can. Less you find out how much disappointing life can be.

PS: the above movie is a Japanese adaptation of king Lear, from Shakespeare. I think its pertinent.

Kurasawa is a f~~~ing genius—I love his stuff. I’m certainly no expert and maybe commenting on Japanese culture is a bit out of my lane but I know what I see. A once great culture founded upon art, courage, family and honor is swiftly passing away into the abyss. Its loss will be keenly felt by anyone with a sense of honor.

In most of the U.S. having no car is like having no legs. Keep your car. Get a part time job if you need more money.

Yes he was. But his movies where totally Japanese, and a bit strange for our western taste. Great pictures, amaking action sequences, but hard to relate to characters and the storytelling is very Japanese: very dramatic and reserve, at the same time.

But this movie, being based on a English classical theatrical play, is simply special.

The crazy old man of the trailer was a warlord that divided his lands between his sons, keeping nothing to himself. Quickly the sons abandon him, mostly through the manipulations of their wives.

The old lord becomes crazy and is reduced to living in the wild, followed only by his fool.
The sons start fighting amongst themselves, and all the women’s intrigues end up destroying the whole clan. Everybody dies.

A powerful MGTOW message from Shakespeare and a warning for all men: you are valued for what you can provide, not what you provided.

That sums it up nicely (I love Kurosawa films), too much elderly shaming and disrespect in western society. My neighbor is 91, lives alone, and still goes out on the tractor and plows peoples driveways. I’m pretty sure when he dies the whole neighborhood will too (metaphorically).

Hey @Hombre – it sounds like you’re looking strictly at the dollars & cents, which is totally fine. But i echo the comments from a few others here about independence – is it hard for you to get around without a car? You mentioned Uber & cabs and such, but that’s relying on others.

For me – if i lived in a place that’s drive-able i’d want a car just so i could go for a drive at 3AM if i couldn’t sleep. I wouldn’t do that often, but i like options. And to me, options are worth paying money.

In the end if $5300/yr is worth it to you, then it’s your call. But for me there are intangibles that sway the decision.

Trade it for a motor bike thus far less gas.

The farmer about a mile south of me is 88, and still runs cattle and a huge chicken farm with all the fodder/crop acreage too. Up before dawn and works all day. Love that guy. I know it sounds cliche since this is the Southern US but his name really is Bubba…

I’m glad to hear it. My neighbor is the same way. He still runs a few green houses. His bitch daughters keep shaming him “at your age, you shouldn’t be living alone!” blah blah blah… He does what he wants to do. Still likes to go to the local pub and have a few drinks with his friends, myself included.

    GENTS,
I certainly appreciate all of your input about selling or keeping my car. As of this time… My health is very good… And I do enjoy my liberty and freedom, I have planned to keep the car. Thank you once again my friends.
