I’ve been looking into starting a Self-Directed Roth IRA. I’ve looked at the choices out there, but wanted to see if anyone is using one and their thoughts and opinions on their custodian company?

I wish mine were self-directed. I tried to direct it, and it went into an investment the SEC called me on, so they could take down the individuals who were doing bad investments. I threw in also the name of the guy who sold it to me. Whatever you do, avoid the hell out of Brad Weinman on the Internet. A supposed nice guy artist who made thousands on the Internet, doing pump and dump before crashing, and showing all the money he made. Nice guy who will cost you your shirt.

I use TD Ameritrade for my self-directed Roth IRA. I’d say I’m very satisfied. Their customer service is top notch. I’ve had to call them about half a dozen times in about 4 years and each time my issue is handled immediately without hassle.

My only real complaint with them is that at the end of last year they “expanded” their commission-free ETF list. The number of ETFs in the list DID expand, but they removed a very large number of the most popular ETFs from the list. It’s not the end of the world, just kind of underhanded how they pitched it, in my opinion.

Have you thought about why you want to be self-directed?

Well I wanted self-directed so I can hold more exotic investments. More specifically mortgage notes.

Ah, I’ve learned something new today. Self-directed means more than I was thinking. I was thinking more that I don’t have an advisor and make all my trades myself.

I’ve heard of these style of accounts where you can own gold and whatnot, but had no idea they had a specific name.

Anyway, let us know how things pan out.
