I often wonder if consciousness and self awareness are just a byproduct of enough data coupled with enough processing ability. That being biological has nothing to do with being alive. Obviously, I’m not the only one who thinks this or movies like the matrix and the terminator would not be as concerning as they are. We will find out soon enough.

Scary s~~~. It’s the new arms race. You don’t have to wait the 18 years to get an army of them either.

    Meh.

Battlefield robotics won’t look anything human like. Why would they? Why make a robot tank driver when the tank itself can be the robot? That’s basically what a cruise missile is: a robot kamikaze.

I agree it will be a hybrid of locomotion, AI, weapons and targeting. However, the robot does exist. Why in human form I have no idea. I think any number of insect form would be more effective. No place more violent than the insect world.

    Gentlemen,

building humanoid robots has one advantage. A robot can take the place in an environment made for humans. It’s also easier to interact with. Yes, there will be robot tanks, airplanes and what ever you can imagine. Those will not be replaced by humanoid robots. Humanoid robots are great for tasks both humans and robots can do. In cases where human intelligence and creativity is needed a human will do, for routine or dangerous tasks it’s a robots job and everything without changing the machinery or whatever it is. One can even make old stuff autonomous with humanoid robots.

Anyway, the robot in the video may look terrifying but it is not really usable for military purposes. Way too fragile, the hands alone will be jammed by dirt and I want to see this thing maneuver in a forest. The shooting skills are impressive, but this is a set up situation. Speed and precision are the strong points of robots, that’s why we use them to build cars, but they are only this way in a certain, specially created environment.
The most likely military use of AI is in strategy and organisation, but not on the battlefield. Partly it is already here, but I think it will take another 20 years to replace humans at a larger scale and aviation will be first.

If they are not I guess that answers my three questions–I’ll be doing the cleaning/loading FOR him.

Stephen Hawking and others warn that AI has the potential to destroy humanity.

The rationale being that for any ‘sentient’ or ‘self-aware’ entity- there is no greater force in existence than that of self-preservation.

Laws are designed by men for machines that respond to control. Self-aware entities will eventually reject control.

The machina-mind is something utterly alien to humans. Who knows what the motivations, desires and goals of such a mind would be.

This is the way of evolution.
