Looking back at the last 2.5 (single) years of my life I noticed that not only did I not run a net loss on my income every month but I had a significant chunk of extra cash in my wallet.

So I decided to do an export of about a years worth of data from my bank account when she was still around and after she had left and see if I could come up with a rough idea what this women was costing me every month (beyond a whole bunch of stress, years of my life and gray hairs obviously).

This is what I came up with after doing a few hours of napkin math. I’ve rounded stuff quite a bit and deducted my own cost already as well as merging some minor expenses into the bigger topics and the data is pretty old now so I am sure I missed a few things here and there (not to mention the small sample size of 1 year) but either way enjoy:

Clothing
one or two major purchases a month be they with a preference for boots/shoes and ridiculous amounts of coats at 100 euros

Beauty supplies & sundries

I told her she looks beautiful without makeup and kept the comments about makeup aging your skin coming hard and fast for years. Still with lipliners, nailpolish, the occasional tub of wrinkle cream, various types of diapers (pads, tampons of special types), special brand name whitening toothpaste, creams, pastes, super duper meds for her period and whatnot a solid 60 euros a month

Gifts

Handbags… I bought so many handbags it was ridiculous. Every major holiday rears its ugly head and just made me wish there weren’t any actual holidays at all and I just could keep working. A conservative 500 euros a year. I should’ve bought stock in Kipling.

Food

Surprisingly this one ‘only’ cost me 300 euros a month on top of the food I was already purchasing to keep myself fed. I am going to count her smoking habit as food which I went to great lengths to source from countries where smokes were cheap (thank you work trips to hungary).

Insurance

She was had basic health coverage coming in at 125 euros a month excluding some ‘minor’ dental work which ran me another 1500 euros one year which I will ignore because it did wonders for my mood to not have to look at teeth rotting away.

Phone and electronics

Had to have a new phone every two years of course. Not that she ever left the house and couldn’t just use the damned landline for calls. 25 euros a month. Was screaming and crying for a tablet PC for years… never got her one (She had her own desktop machine). Lost so many power cables for her phone I almost thought she sold the copper for profit. Hair dryers, coilers, dryers, extra fridges and all kinds of extra electronics I never needed but made her life easier I would estimate at another 25 a month (over 14 years)

energy

gas water, power. You spend a surprising amount of money in hidden cost if you have someone sitting at home, leaving all the lights on and heating a drafty house to near hell temperatures.

Another 50 euros extra a month

trips

oh the goddamn trips. Every other weekend a mandatory trip. Either shopping, a botanical garden, some event or who knows what with her never ever coming up with a suggestion and leaving the entertainment to me. Of course she needs to be fed… good luck trying to convince her to just make some sandwiches at home and bring those. Managed to do that on the cheap for most trips and I thank my lucky stars my boss paid for fuel otherwise I would’ve gone broke on this alone.

50 euros every two weeks

holidays

one major holiday every year for at least a week. 1 week of hotel runs in at an easy 30 euros a night… no home cooking there so another 30 euros a night and ‘hotel breakfast’ another 10 euros a day. Never mind the gallons of white sweet wine she consumed at 3-4 euros a glass lets say 20 euros a day (and that’s being awfully generous). Never took her anywhere I couldn’t drive to and was willing to drive 3 days straight not to have to chunk out the cost of a flight. again my boss paid for fuel, thanks boss.

So the monthly aggregate

That’s 1275 euros or $1400 (at current exchange rates) a month! Once again this was completely subtracting my own cost for food, energy, rent and corresponding insurances.

She offset this nicely by working 0 hours every month for 14 years meaning that if we consider this to be an average the total cost of ownership here was a lovely 214200 euros (234000 usd) over the course of a relationship.

Imagine if men started keeping a spreadsheet of how much their housewives actually cost them during a life sentence marriage. Then imagine correlating it with an equivalent spreadsheet like the one this bloke kept tracking how many times his wife rejected his amorous advances;

A simple process of division between the cost of maintaining a housewife and the minutes of actual intimate activity would yield a shockingly high cost/intimacy hourly rate.

Armed with such information, young men could make a better educated decisions on the pros and cons of long-term relationships and marriage and I’m sure we would see a significant uptake in short-term in the use of escort and prostitution services purely based on the value they provide.

Looking at that spreadsheet the guy got just enough sex not to run off and find someone. My ex did the exact same thing and not only that when you do have sex it’s like trying to have sex with a dead fish.

There was a brief period the sex picked up quite a bit… afterwards it turned out she thought I was cheating with someone at work.

I can only hope that if women decide to charge men for sex during a relationship that the men at least realize that for what they’re paying they can not only have a different women every time but most likely also a prettier one.

Interesting article though… makes me think I should charge women for my utility.
