I’m separated and in a divorce process. It’s been some months now, but at this point it’s pretty clear that I am financially ruined. So, to add gasoline to the fire, I found out today, after doing the dreaded calculations, that I will most likely be owing the taxman a few thousand dollars that I had not anticipated or planned on (and that I don’t have anywhere). My ride into the negative begins. The red ink spills from now on. I can think of something else I’d like to spill and paint the ex in. But after all, that thought will have to remain a fantasy as I have no desire to get ass raped on top of getting financially destroyed.

The way society’s mechanisms work is a joke: a tragic comedy.

Bro i am now very happy in having f~~~ all . I to have lost everything . My kids are my first priority . F~~~ money and f~~~ woman and the c~~~ system . I am happy to have f~~~ing nothing and now am on a pension with the government paying me .

I don’t know why people care about our kids. They certainly are NOT my first priority. Who are we kidding? Most of us got the kids forced on us. Then societal propaganda pushes us into this BS that we are suppose to go ape raving crazy about them. This propaganda probably originated with the women. Though maybe some pussy whipped blue-pills ran with the theme to keep their bitches happy.
Society is too involved in telling dads how to relate to their children. Get this logic: Let’s put a dad in jail because he can’t afford to pay support as it appears in a judgement even though, what’s in the judgement is based on an ‘imputed’ amount. A good case study in this sense is Dave Foley:

If you live in the US you can go on a payment plan for you taxes. At least then you won’t owe it all at once. Are you filing a joint tax return? If you are then she owes half. Taxes are a joint liability if you are filing married. The tax bill should be considered a liability split in the divorce.

I separated in 2016, so I intend to file for myself only. She has custody so I think the issue may be that I’m having trouble getting what I used to get in terms of tax breaks for dependent children. I may have to pay an accountant to help me because I think I should have a right to some kind of tax relief for the time in 2016 that I was not considered separated.

You have to maintain and use your rights if you don’t want to lose them. However, once the judge decided to render a judgement that seems excessive by anybody with common sense, he then became the target of the threat of jail time. Fearing jail, he decided to stay away from Canada and to forego seeing his children. How in hell does that demonstrate that society has the children’s best interests at heart? CROCK OF S~~~!

You should have your tax returns prepared both ways and see what is the best for you combined. It may be that filing a joint return is the best way to go.
Just remember that the BEST answer is that the two of you combined keep the most money possible. Better that the two of you keep the money instead of paying extra to the IRS. That just leaves you with less assets to split.
Separated is not divorced, so your options are married filed separate or married filing joint. It’s your marital status as of December 31, 2016 that counts.
And if you file separately, then the kids should be claimed by the person in the higher tax bracket. There is a form to file if the non-custodial parent is claiming the children. Even if you have to give her some money to make up for the fact that you are claiming the children, they should go to the person in the higher tax bracket with some compensation back to the other person.
If you have two or more children, you should both be claiming at least one after the divorce. That way you can both file Head of Household. My ex and I did that in our divorce papers. It saves me several thousand dollars a year. She couldn’t argue with me that it is better that I have that extra money to spend on the kids than to give it to the IRS.
Good luck.

Woah! Thank you TaxGuy. You shared some ideas that hadn’t crossed my mind. I will be looking into this a little more. From what I can tell, any of my decisions regarding how I’ll be filing my taxes for 2016 will have a huge impact on where I stand financially after the filing. I think I will hold off on filing and get some very specific tax advice related to my specific case. It looks like it may well be worth any tax accountant fees I will have to pay.

Glad to help! In between sarcastic comments and talking about my narcissistic ex, I like to help out a little if I can….

If you still have some health, and you can continue to work then you have an OPPORTUNITY to build a “NEW” life. It may not be the life that you have envisioned for yourself, but in time it might be better in ways you don’t expect.

Indeed… I’m having a difficult day. What is it about some of us, that there is this thing in us that longs for the comfort that belongs to the reinvented past. I’m guilty of purposely haphazardly stumbling across some stuff on a SM site. I know it’s a no-go zone, crap! Damned you blue pill, be damned for good! I’m freaking PONR for Pete’s sake!
Damsel in distress! Typical! Whatever… Not my problem no more.

Opted to sit down with a tax specialist. There’s too much at stake to be leaving anything to chance. I know what I would have had to fork over to the taxman using my calculations and limited knowledge. I expect I’ll see better results with a specialist handling the matter and be convinced in the end that it was worth the outlay. I’m in the middle of a divorce process, it’s a somewhat tricky matter as TaxGuy pointed out in some of the ideas he exposed.

You made the right call man.
I got f~~~ed in taxes during my divorce too. But i reacted emotionally and didn’t go for the tax specialist. I probably should have (though that would’ve required my talking to the bitch, and didn’t want to do that at all).
You’re 100% doing the right thing. And if i was able to get through it, you definitely can.
