It was a lot better than I expected. This was a actual star war and not a touchy feely bring the kids type of film. The plan is a suicide mission and you feel the urgency throughout the film. Even down to very last moments where you see just how close the entire mission was for not. There were a couple things that I eye rolled but this blows Episode VII out of the water IMO.
This story gives Episode IV a breath of fresh air and does a eloquent job of explaining why Luke was able to take out the entire Death Star with a X-Wing. Vader scenes were few but oh so menacing. Theres a part where he straight up slaughters a group of rebels force chocking / throwing along the way.
Even though we’ve all seen the Death Star blow up planets its used in ways that still get across the point of how powerful that station is. You get a up close and personal look of the receiving end of that blast.
The pacing and character development was well done and reminded me of how well Guardians of the Galaxy did with introducing the team as individuals and bringing them together. You also get a deeper look into the politics and power grabs within the Empire as oppose to the clean sterile efficient killing machine that its usually depicted as.
For all the mary sue-ness of the trailer it really didn’t translate to the feel of the movie. You could have just as easily put a guy in her place and the story wouldn’t change what so ever.
Jin, the female lead, doesn’t do anything crazy and the few fights she gets into are believable. Her character is raised by a militant rebel too extreme for the tastes of the rebel alliance from the ages of 6-16 (give or take I forget). With that background and the way she’s portrayed I thought they did a good job not getting all girl power on the audience while showing she wont go down without a fight. Its very akin to the way Marvel handles the female aspects of Black Widow.
There were more than few chuckles well placed through out the film. The comic relief is mostly delivered by the driod KS2 but Donnie Yen had the best lol for me. Wont ruin it but it has to do with putting a black bag over a blind mans head.
All in all this was very enjoyable.
I thought what I'd do was I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes...or should I?
Thanks for that LM
I will make it a point to see this one
I am a die-hard Star Wars Ep IV to VI fan back in the 78’s – 80’s. I guess you have to had seen it then to appreciate how George Lucas changed Sci-Fi films forever.
Ep I to III had less of the swashbuckling and more story – which was still great, and fit into the puzzle. George know how to keep things fresh and real – actors included. All the props were soo cool.
Ep VII was a complete let-down for me. Even with Ford and Fisher in smaller roles the acting was average, the script and casting was overly too familiar and tired. There was no George Lucas magic to dazzle. This was typical Disney at the cash register and merchandising sales – KA-CHING!
Hope this one brings back the memories.
Don’t spoil too much but who’s the antagonist in the white uniform?

@yumbo yah they did a great job keeping to the old asthetics while tossing in a few new things. Visual this was well put together.
@joey he’s another head guy vying for the emporers favor. His rival within the empire isn’t the type to be trifled with, you’ll know him when you see him.

Thanks for the review Laughing Man. I ALMOST went to a late, late, late show last night.
In your opinion would you see it in 3D?
I don’t care for the glasses very much. ( maybe I’m getting old )Just a big screen with Dolby ATMOS™ is my kind of show.
I DID read a spoiler review(s) last night and won’t elaborate… but many said Darth Vader is a real menace and he obliterates the whiny prequel Anakin. Apparently “ROGUE ONE” sets up SW EPIV (A New Hope) so well, that there will not a sequel, because the sequel was already made ….. 40 years ago.
If you keep doing what you've always done... you're gonna keep getting what you always got.Saw in 3D imax and will be going again next week. I honestly can’t remember the 3D being over the top but it sure makes the space battles worth it.
You really do end Rogue one wanting to see IV. “A New Hope” pretty much sums up how you’re left at the end.
I thought what I'd do was I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes...or should I?
It’s an ok movie, definatly worth watching.
Don’t buy into what that SJW scriptwriter said. He’s talking bollocks.
I just saw it. The franchise has redeemed itself.
If you rescue a damsel in distress, all you will get is a distressed damsel.
Thanks FB. Must go see then. I am also a fan of Donnie Yen so that’s two reasons. 🙂
Saw it tonight at a very late show. I caved and opted for 3D, and I have to say it was the first 3D movie I ever enjoyed. Forgot I was wearing those stupid glasses. Depth of field (blur) was extremely cool and overall, they really made the most of the technology.
A few original character(s) brought back with near PERFECT CG – including hairs out of place. I was shocked and others gasped. It was brilliantly done – and fun to see. The homage to the originals (and other characters) was everywhere. Big respect for that.
Vader was contrived at first and “tried too hard”. I didn’t listen to a word he said because his entrance was distractingly “gay”. He walked like he was light in the loafers and moved too much. Not solid enough, but his second appearance redeemed it. When villains over do it, they get funny when they don’t mean to be.
The girl was “one mood all the time”. K2SO (the droid) was my favorite character…. and I liked everything about the Empire. They were a real threat. Camera work and space battles was SICK. Story was good, and I “cared” , but not quite enough.
I don’t like when trailers show shots that aren’t in the movie. There is a trailer where a TIE Fighter appears at the end of the platform. I was stoked for that and it must have been cut. And her line “this is a rebellion isn’t it? I rebel.” didn’t make the film either.
It humiliated the prequel trilogy. They should be forgotten. F~~~ George Lucas for screwing those up. What a goddamned embarrassment.
The last couple of minutes ( the set up for EPIV “A New Hope”) was just great.
Everyone cheered at the last line. The franchise has redeemed itself.
Totally.
If you keep doing what you've always done... you're gonna keep getting what you always got.Haha yah almost forgot that cheesy line, you’re right with the trying too hard becomes funny.
I don’t know all the details but I read there was some big reshoots, could explain the lost footage.
I thought what I'd do was I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes...or should I?
