Restaurants are the worst possible investment.
Most new restaurants fail spectacularly, and most investors / owners have never worked in a restaurant before they go in. Even experienced cooks, managers, waiters, bartenders, etc. generally go completely under trying to run a restaurant.
Once upon a when, the best training programs for restaurants were from hotel chains. Back when the world was young and things didn’t suck as much, one didn’t have to spray one’s goddamn room upon renting it, and hotel chains tended to have good (if maybe a little dull) restaurants. The bar at the Hilton – or the Sheraton, or the Marriott – around the f~~~ing world in all kinds of oddball places was where Americans would often eat because the food was a solid three stars, the liquor and cigarettes were recognizable, and you could get a decent steak. Anywhere. In f~~~ing Burma you could get a decent steak, a Jack Daniels, and a Marlboro. Many hotel restaurants were “for hotel guests only”, which meant for Westerners only.
These chains offered fantastic training programs for restaurant managers, many of whom went on to open successful restaurants. Honestly, I have no clue what the f~~~ they taught, but the only successful restauranteurs I have known over the years came out of these programs in the 50s, 60s, and 70s.
Actors and professional athletes and coaches are infamous soaks when it comes to opening restaurants. F~~~ing infamous for it. They think they’re intelligent in all things, because people kiss their ass all day, so they think they’re f~~~ing geniuses, and can do anything. Historically, actors were treated as on par with prostitutes and certain types of merchants – totally untrustworthy and not part of any kind of society. It’s a mark as to how f~~~ed up we are that people would listen to Di Nero about anything other than acting.
Oh, he was an early supporter of both Obama and Hillary, in late 2006. Well, f~~~ him then, for being a corporate Hollywood quasi-Democrat. F~~~ him. Actual leftists would have supported Kucinich (sp?) back then, not those corporate whores.
No, no one outside of TinselDemontown gives a f~~~ about Rwandan coffee, and you’d have to have never left a rich area in twenty years to think they would. Sure, little trendy stores in Hollywood or Bel Air or whatever can survive selling fair trade s~~~ when the store’s owner’s husband is an orthodontist, but otherwise, no, no American gives a flying f~~~ and is willing to spend money on this. A quarter of the country has been out of work for a decade, millions are homeless, and at least a hundred million are just getting by. No one gives one f~~~ about refugees, we’re all tired of illegal immigrants, and if you want to help Rwandans, send them some f~~~ing rifles and teach them small unit tactics.
