I wonder if technology, smart phones, f~~~ book, 14 million colors are rewiring our brains in some manner.

Maybe it is more taxing on our neurons to process at a speed that we didn’t evolve to?

    What do you guys think?

I am more curious about epigenetics. That is the stuff that is causes certain genes to be expressed.

But, for the other speed of electronics taxing us, well, I can verify that it is a great distraction from reality.

It’s f~~~ing up our memories for sure as people no longer need to retain information. We take for granted that we can google anything and everything.

Cognitive offloading they call it. Read more here:

It’s true, that we no longer need to retain that much information in head. But: this has been so since the invention of handwriting on paper or way before. We can devote full brain for creativity, and know where we can find information necessary for it. And also for creativity, now we have computers, CAD software, genetic algorithms, and a lot of stuff off-loading our brains, we do not need to concentrate on small details that much, but we need to mostly understand them. Also, current technology is overly complex (since it’s based on million of engineers working together), there is no human brain who can handle it all alone.

The necessary next step would be to install those new processors and RAM modules into our nervous system to help with even more data.

No thanks we’re already connected enough IMO

I like the Idea of unplugging once in a while and even writing things down or doing math long hand.

I truly believe people are becoming less intelligent and more reliant on technology.
Most don’t even know how to do simple home repairs or car maintenance anymore.
Also spelling and basic math skills seem to be in decline too.

I absolutely agree. I feel like life is just more and more complicated the more technology advances. I find that I can not keep up, nor do I really want to.

Same here, can’t remember the last time I noted anything down with a pencil and a piece of paper.

You can use technology as much or as little as you want to. Remember, technology was created for YOU, not the other way around. I run a computer repair and sales business and I use pen and paper for nearly everything. Not stuff like writing receipts or doing taxes, but for everyday things I use a pen and paper. Grocery list? Pen and paper. Notes to self? Pen and paper. Appointments? Little mini calendar and pen.

I don’t have a smart thermostat, nor would I EVER want one. Do I think the technology is cool? Yes. Do I help my clients set up stuff like that? Yes. Do I want one in my own home? HELL NO! I like my $50 “dumb” thermostat. I set it to one temperature and it either turns on the A/C or heat to keep it at that temperature. I haven’t touched the thing in YEARS, and that’s how I like it. Until it breaks I’ll never touch it again.

Same thing with toilets with sensors. I want to control when the damned toilet flushes, thank you. If you’re too damned lazy to reach back and flush the toilet then you’ve got some serious problems. I’m sure we’ll have a device with an app that we can use to flush the toilet using a smartphone or tablet pretty soon, and I’m sure millions of people will buy them (and pay me to install them). I just won’t be one of them.

It certainly does affect me. I sometimes volunteer to climb up on roofs and do antenna repair for elderly neighbors who are virtually housebound during winter months and still watch broadcast tv to help pass the time. Even though I don’t watch commercial tv myself, other than my pre-recorded disc collection .. when I tune their antennas, I can barely watch the commercials because they give me vertigo and actually make me nauseous. The problem is that the programs themselves are almost as bad with shaky camera and quick cut edits that make me sick. It seems that many types of new technology that flash and twirl affect me and probably raise my blood pressure as well. When my sister brings her smart phone by and wants me to look at pictures she’s taken .. she twirls and flips them so fast I sometimes need to look away. This is why I mostly collect and watch the older shows on disc. The old rock steady camera work of decades ago was worth it’s wight in gold to me. That’s pretty much all I watch .. shows from the 1930’s through the mid 90’s. I don’t believe I have a single show collected post 1999.

Excellent thread title…been away from here, and damn near everywhere else online, and in life for the past 8 months to do this very thing, rewire my brain from the rewiring of how supersonic everything is now. Of course that is why I have been on my hiatus, as I posted in my thread recently, to unplug, reboot and regroup…

I don’t think I am going my own way anymore. I Think my road trip is done and I have reached my destination. Sure, there may have been some pit stops I missed, and I may travel back to them, but I have a “fresh” outlook on my life, and dare I say it…I think it’s a first for me.

For me it did, hands down, no contest, without a doubt. For a long time, I stressed myself out on trying to keep up.

Hell, I don’t even want the position of pace car for it all. Been on a quest to eliminate as many sources of stress in my life as possible…

Adds another notch to my holster.
