Public Whores, or Red Pill Dating for the wealthy.

If you have never seen the movie “Gigi” I recommend it. <http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0051658/>
It’s a chick-flick to be sure, but there is a subtext that is only hinted at. (It would make an excellent date night flick, since your chick friend is unlikely to dig into things like subtext. Heck, even if she gets it, she’ll probably approve.)

The Subtext:
First. All the adult women in Gigi’s life are public whores, or ‘courtesans’ since their clients are rich. Gigi herself is a courtesan in training.
Second. All women are not so different from courtesans. Only social conventions allow us to tell them apart, and this can be difficult.

History is repeating itself. The modern day Kaysters (not their real names) would fit right in, except Hermione Gingold’s character had loads of class. Her counterpart, Momma Kayster, is devoid of this quality as are her offspring. However, they are alike in their wealth gathering activities, their vulgar public displays of wealth, and they are alike in training up the next generation in the career of courtesan. (When it comes to the Kaysters, ‘public whore’ fits better, but their johns are all rich as are the courtesan’s.)

Gigi Was Based on a True Story.

This I did not know until I chanced upon the article below.

THE COURTESAN
<http://www.edwardianpromenade.com/sex/the-courtesan/>
All the elements of “Gigi” are there, public displays at Maxim’s, the courtesans’ jewelry, the courtesans’ vicious rivalries, their beaus discarding them after a time. History repeats.

The only false note in the movie was he marries her in the end. False for me, that is — men marry ‘courtesans’ every day. It’s just that they find out later, after it’s too late to discard them.

Charles Boyer’s character had the right idea — pump and dump after “many months of pleasure.” So did Gingold’s character — squeeze all you can out of him while his lust-fueled generosity lasts. It was an honest arrangement.

The End(s)

It has a true Hollywood ending: Handsome French Guy marries courtesan-in-training. (Your date night chick friend will need some tissues. Make sure there’s a box handy. That’s what movies like this are for.) But was it happy in the long run? This question is unanswered in the movie, but given it is set in 1900s Paris, we can make a guess.

Outcome 1. Handsome French Guy’s family threatens to cut off his allowance and / or disinherit him if he marries this unacceptable woman. His women relatives will see to this, no matter what the men think. Handsome French Guy will shower Gigi with diamonds and dump her. He’ll get another mistress. She’ll be sad, but after 4.5 days she’ll be back at Maxim’s on some other Handsome French Guy’s arm.

Outcome 2. Handsome French Guy’s family threatens to cut off his allowance and / or disinherit him if he marries this unacceptable woman. He defies them and pledges eternal love and devotion. After a serious talking-to from Gingold’s character, Gigi dumps him. She is not so stupid as to marry a man who is broke and has no prospects. (This saves his bacon too!) Anyway, her women relatives (Gingold’s character, et al), are not going to let her end up in some slum like one of those courtesans without her connections. She will be back at Maxim’s, etc. (She is extraordinarily fortunate in her choice of relatives.)

Outcome 3. The marriage goes through. (HIs family can’t block it for some reason.) She is set for life. He will not be plagued with divorce and alimony (we’re in 1900 in France). He’ll get another mistress after 4.5 years. She won’t rock the boat; she’ll just stay at the mansion and raise the kids. They really will live happily ever after … in a very 1900s French way.

I screwed up the URLs. Sorry. Here’s a better version.

Oh yeah I know Gigi well. Used to be a Gene Kelly fan as a kid. (blown away by the homework you do!)

Thanks for the compliment Key Master. It was the result of one of those “ah ha” moments when all sorts of seemingly disconnected pieces fit the puzzle.
