Question about building my own website

So, for a while I’ve been wanting to make my own website to share my creative works from writing to music ect. So, does anyone have any advice? How much does it cost to keep and maintain a website? Who can I go to to help me build one? Can I back it all up with a few terabyte hard drives? Is it worth it or should I stick to the free or cheaper services out there like blogspot and soundcloud, youtube ect. The main reason I want to is that I feel it lends some professionalism to my works, instead of giving a prospective employer a link to my sound cloud or a blogspot page, I can direct them to my professional looking website instead of looking like the thousands of other people out there. Any thoughts are appreciated.

You can get something “good enough to start” with pro features for about $80 a year – assuming you don’t have LOTS of traffic. That’s for the basic “real estate” on the net (hosting / server space and about 25GB / 100K visitors a month). Plenty to start.

Thats not including the domain name. Domain names range from $5 to thou$sands… to millions.

We just started dabbling in that.
The concept is like “selling coca cola with another label” for 20 cents less than Coca Cola®.

Doubtful you’ll ever need it. We’ve been running for 2 years and the site is 10GB in total.

Agreed good thinking. BEST way to do it. It’s exactly how I got my first job in the field. Created the site with all my art and 3D work, sent them a link, got interviewed on Friday, and hired and started on Monday. No bulls~~~.

Start looking around at “portfolio” sites. LINE25 has some cool recommendations and samples, but developer / artist / photographer “portfolio” sites is what you want to check out.

I use Webs.com. They have a free setup, but it only limits you to just 10 pages before they make you pay for one of three packages. Webs.com is, in my opinion, for people who want something simple. It’s user friendly. You just need to drag modules in and fill in the content. For me, I had to tinker around with those modules so I can give myself ideas on what to do and how to structure those pages and you should see what I came up with; very clever and creative.

My website of Ninja Turtles consists of thousands of pages and I have just under 3 gigs of storage.

Based on what you’re laying out so far, I suggest, if you go with Webs, is to put in the navigation bar the different categories of your different interests, hobbies, and talents, and fill in those pages with all you have.

I am a big fan of sticking close to HTML5. It will do the job, but you will never create a site as cleverly done as this one.
