Or, I should say, MAMMAL pets.

I currently have four cats.  The apartment complex found out about them two weeks ago, and said they will charge me huge bucks if I don’t get them out soon.  They said they would have charged me already, but they like me as a resident there because I’m usually upfront and honest about everything with them.

How did I end up with them?  When I was dating the ex, she and I got two of them for free last July.  One boy, one girl.  The ex was going to get at least the GIRL fixed.  She left for another state altogether and left me with them, saying she’d either come back or she’d get the girl brought to her somehow.  At the same time, I ended up with my mother’s cat, who paid for me to have her shots and everything she needed, which is great and all.  My mother was going to take her cat back when she got her own house.

My ex never got HER girl fixed.

My mother ended up recently marrying a guy that’s allergic to cats.

The girl gave birth to 3 kittens about 3 months ago, right before I finally had the money to fix the boy.  Two have been sold so far.  My ex returned a couple of weeks ago, and said she can take the girl and her kitten with her once she has her own place…which may be in the next month or so….but she can’t take them now because she’s living with her mother who won’t allow her to take them NOW.

That leaves me with 4 cats.  They’re expensive as all get out, and they wake me up between 5:30 and 6:30 every morning literally pounding, scratching, and howling at my door to feed them.  I’d let them in my room, but they wake me up at the same time anyway (sometimes earlier) when they want their food by nibbling on me.  It’s becoming fragging ANNOYING.

What do I WANT to do?  I want to find them a good home, to be honest!  I don’t know why I’m so annoyingly emotionally attached to these cats.  It has nothing to do with my ex or my mother much…except that they both make me feel bad for even CONSIDERING putting them up on Craigslist and the like.  “Noooo, you can’t get rid of my baby!” …That’s literally both of their words.  Well, they’re not here cleaning out the litter box and feeding them twice a day!  They’re not paying for the food or litter!  Sure, taking my mother’s cat to the vet covers some good payment there, but the food becomes REALLY expensive overtime!  Let’s just do the math here.

I buy a huge bag of cat food, about $10, every 3 weeks or so.  It’s been about a year since I got them.  Mathematically, that’s about over $170…on FOOD ALONE.  The litter is even MORE, considering I have to change it out every two days or so.

I know, people on here have dogs and cats, but good mercy…if I had known I’d have a stupid emotional attachment to them, I’d have not accepted them in the first place!  I’ve been good at not having emotional attachments to WOMEN, and I’m no PETA animal-worshiper, but there’s just something that makes THIS hard.

I have them up on Craigslist right now (besides my mother’s cat) for $10 a piece, except for the boy who is $20 because he’s fixed and has his shots.  Should I just make them free just to get it over with?  I’m finally out of my financial bind that hurt me over the past few months.  Still catching up, but doing MUCH better than before…and I’m trying to make like a little easier on myself.

I swear, I honestly have a MUCH easier time with reptiles.  The turtles I’ve owned are EASY to take care of and much, MUCH cheaper…

If I want a pet again, I’m considering getting that, or something else in a tank.  I’ve learned tank pets are far more stressful for me.

    Rant over.

KeyMaster’s gonna love this thread.  That point aside, I love cats but at the moment wont take one on (heartbreak over my last one or three).

As for trying to charge, you are talking just a few bucks – not gonna make or break you, but it may be a determinant in someone taking them from you, so I would forgo the price – if you can get them a good home, that is enough.  As for the mom and ex saying “that’s my baby” … tell them to f~~~ off.  Seriously, that is bulls~~~ from them.

I miss my monsters nibbling my toes at 5am to get their chow.  I’d take the love and companionship of a cat or dog over any woman any day.

Free pets generally aren’t a good idea as they don’t go to good homes. This is why Craigslist deletes “free cat” listings.

Have you tried talking to local pet shops? I know some of them (PetCo, PetSmart, ect) do cat adoptions from various human societies. Find whoever is bringing the cats for that place and contact them. Tell them your problem and that you need to rehome the cats. There’s a good chance you can get them to put your cats in the store to get adopted as many groups are happy not to have to feed and house more cats. If all else fails, you can always give the cats to them so they can rehome them.

    Evening Chris,

We’ve spoken about these little guys before, seems they have multiplied since then. Good to hear things have improved with your situation otherwise, let’s see what we can do here.

So you currently have 4 cats:
    Your boy
    Mum’s girl
    Ex’s girl and kitten

The only one of those that is your responsibility is your boy, the others need to go, now. Your mother and ex are being selfish, your mother first off for marrying a guy who’s allergic to cats when she has one and then expecting you to look after it for her and your ex for not getting hers spayed and expecting you to look after it and its kittens, both while not paying a cent towards their keep, you need to tell them both straight up that they have three options:

    1. Take the cats back
    2. Pay for their keep including the extra the housing company will charge you for having them at your place
    3. Lose them to people that will actually give a s~~~ about the animals (Craigslist)

And stick to it, let them bitch, but if they refuse to act like owners to “my baby” then they lose ownership, simple as. Then you can decide if the boy is worth keeping for the extra it will cost you (probably not but we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it)

(I think it should be noted, if it’s not obvious, that these cats were relinquished to me while I was struggling out of my blue pill self.  I thankfully discovered this site about 5 months afterward.  Had I had my thought process like I do now, I would have flat out told BOTH of them “no.”)

I sat and thought very deeply about it after posting this.  In fact, I got to the point that I’m not AS attached to the cats.  I think it’s because I thought about MY finances.  I thought about MY future here.  I thought about how this affect ME.  I got to the point while thinking that I don’t care if I look selfish, I’m doing what I can to get ’em out of here.

(I even bought a VERY decently priced tank creature for entertainment…an emperor scorpion)

I went to the pet shop after work Friday and talked to them about my situation.  They have a local place called “Second Chance Pets” that allegedly would take the cats for free and find them a decent home.  I took a drive over to the pet shop yesterday to talk to the workers there.  They were useless.  The woman I talked to said to e-mail their office, and that’s the best they could do.  I told them if I get caught within my apartment complex, I will face a $100 fine for each cat, and will be demanded to pay the $300 pet deposit…per cat.  We’re talking $1300 here.

When I told the lady this, she simply told me “I think you’d be better off paying the deposit before you’re fined.”  Like I said…these women were utterly USELESS.  They were horrible at acting like they cared, too.

Yeah lady, let me pull $900 out of thin air when I literally only make an extra $350 a month right now.

I actually would love to have a centipede, too!! Those are awesome, but I wouldn’t know where to find one. I found the poor scorpion in a tiny cage at Petsmart.

Those centipedes get EXCITED when they see those crickets!
