As I have said before, I am never sure with you Colin where having a laugh begins and ends. That’s no bad thing but it makes it hard to understand. You do seem to be talking a lot about sin and loathing your meat sack and such and it does seem all a bit like you have swallowed too much middle eastern theology. I agree with Wizzard’s pupil. Our Germanic ancestors did not have a problem with liking themselves or their bodies. They were not always worried about having broken one of the myriad sub-clauses of a contract that their god once made with someone else on their behalf. They were very strong about not breaking their own word but they were not told by their gods that they were inherently evil and should always struggle against themselves.

It can be very hard to break out of the liberal Christian world view where people (men especially) are inherently bad and must always guard their thoughts. Certainly negative thoughts and emotions affect our health and well being but they do not come from an inherent evilness in humanity.

Some of us actually work, not playing around conversing with overseas misfits all afternoon. In my forties now, hormone depletion, it’s all disintegration from here, damage limitation.

I have, but the paradox is, Yeshua is still in mind and heart. A lot of the bible makes sense. A turmoil that continues from that and this day hence.
It is the best “theory” that we have as to why we are such a wretched species(yes ALL specimens). Science cannot and will never be able to critique the deeper human meaning. Evolution is nonsense….we all come from Trilobites!

Think about it. If the bible is complete fabrication, why has it held up for so long. No other text has had the same impact as the Gospels and Torah. Other ancestral Gods haven’t been relayed, promoted, and worshipped in the same manner as the Abrahamic God. Approx a third of the prophesises have come to fruition.
Believe me, most of the time I hope the bible is not true(another guilt on my heart), but something deep inside tells me the crux of it is. Find out in around 3000morrows.

The bible is a collection of Jewish and early Christian writing that was approved as the standard version by the council of Nicea. As that it is 100% true. It is the real deal -a collection of Jewish and early Christian writing approved by the council of Nicea.

If however you want the answers to life the universe and everything you start to have to look pretty hard to find it all in the bible. A lot of bright sparks have given their best energies to it for more than a millennium. They have come up with some quite different answers and scisms, heresies, reformations, counter reformations and reinventions have followed with a reasonable amount of blood letting.

The fellow who goes out killing queers because the bible says its the right thing to do and the queer bishop can’t both be right? The devout catholic and the devout protestant who disagree on the doctrine of transubstantiation can’t both be right? Hell even genesis 1 and genesis 2 take a bit of a twisting to make them agree and we are only just getting started. Yahweh goes from a jealous head of a pantheon who has a human form and forbids any god to be preferred to him to being the only god there ever was, who is incorporeal, has three forms, yet only took human form once (sorry Enoch you did not see Yahweh’s back) and no one ever thinks it a bit odd?

If there are literally thousands of different types of Christians with subtly different beliefs, there is only a slim chance that one has it right and I am not betting on that.

Were you raised a devout Christian Colin? I was. I know how a Christian upbringing gives you a world map and even a vocabulary that cannot be replaced with anything else. Nothing quite fits the omniscient benign creator who makes covenants sized hole in your life if you abandon your Christian ways. But that is still not a good enough reason to live with a load of 2 millennia old Jewish stories and base your ideas of right and wrong on them.

Eloquent post Mr Branch, some valid points. It is an interesting debate that neither side could ever hope to gain the majority.
A few retorts. The council of Nicea omitted(supposedly) quite a few documents that didn’t befit the finished book, such as the Gnostic texts, the Book of Thomas/Mary/Lost Gospel of Mark etc as they were(again supposedly) seen as forgeries. Well, if the book of Thomas was genuine for example, then Christianity stands on flimsy ground! However, we know the Roman Empire had a hidden agenda into subscribing what we now know as modern Christianity. Would Yeshua really have told Constantine in a dream to conquer ones’ enemy thorough force?
Regarding the myriad of “Christian” denominations. Isn’t that just man’s interpretation in order to fit in with his lifestyle. If one is to be a bible literalist, then one has to follow ALL the commands of the both bibles, including stoning adulterers, although some retort that Yeshua said in the New, “Those without sin cast the first stone”

I agree entirely about the council of Nicea. You are pretty much making my point. The council of Nicea was genuinely scholarly. They rightly excluded a lot of texts of dubious origin but they also only included what fitted with their agenda (which I am not sure was actually too hidden). They had to take a disparate underground religion and homogenise it, so it could make an accommodation with a powerful state that had actually long been the force against which the religion had defined itself.

Constantine’s dream was the dream of an emperor (and those dreams often happen when emperors are awake but even if it was when he was asleep it is still a suitable dream for a man like him). Jesus gave the teachings of a carpenter who turned itinerant preacher man in the poorest region of a kingdom recently assumed into the Roman empire. The two are a long long way apart.

Mohammed was right -a prophet is sent to a place and time. Everyone takes spirituality in their own context. My point is that every text in the bible is contextual in origin and every reader comes with his own context. There is therefore no fundamental truth to grasp except quite a few truths about humanity. Christianity is woven into the traditions of our tribe and it is hard to want to turn one’s back on one’s traditions.

I like to debate theology almost as much as you like to write poems. I have given fair warning.

I have always believed we are more than this outer shell. It has only been around 18months since I have delved into Monotheism. I try to read as much ancient text as I can stomach. The Koran is a good one! Sex mad, as every organised religion is(figures as it was written by the Catholic church).
I also enjoy a good debate, especially with Catholics.

Ah yes the Cathars, they are interesting, yet so hard to understand. I have stood in Beziers and Carcassone and wondered about them. They lost and today it is hard to know what they stood for, to really get inside their beliefs. They are just history now, yet at the time it mattered to them enough to die for.

One has to think they were probably doomed though -soy boys who didn’t like marriage, women priests, women living in communes raising children in their belief, bet it was the 20:80 rule in Pays Cathars.

Another “cult” attempting to twist scripture to suit their own agendas. Who knows what the real Christians were like, the Roman Empire killed them all!(as well destroying old manuscripts).
Nah, Islam is not a threat in the UK, propaganda perpetuated by the mainstream media. Most militant Muslims want their own laws in their own territory. Feminism and the gay community are a REAL threat to humanity.
