I happen to know there is a nation wide shortage of big rig drivers in the USA. With that in mind, I recommend watching this.

A portrait of contemporary American life, as seen through the eyes of long-haul truck drivers.

Why is there such a shortage?

What is the actual pay like?

    Curious . . .

Thank you for the film reference.

I’ve considered doing this for a couple-three years to pay down some debts. My main concern is that, while I’m a quite good driver of automobiles, my skills in maneuvering large giant trucks would wind up with myriad accidents and whoopsies. I’m not clumsy – quite the opposite in sparring, actually – and have quite good hand-eye coordination. But I’ve never honestly understood how the f~~~ professional drivers maneuver the damn rigs.

I do it, and the reason it’s not dominated by women is because it’s hard f~~~ing work. Long hours all by yourself, miles from home, and if there’s a problem you have to deal with it all by yourself, and that scares all the women off, self reliance not being their strong suit. Also, women can’t f~~~ing drive a normal car, how do you think they’ll handle a semi and a 50 foot trailer? Also, you kind of have to have good directional skills, even with a GPS, you’d be surprised how many times it will fail you on roads that still aren’t marked. So, in short…
    -Hard work
-You need to be self reliant
    -Women can’t f~~~ing drive
    -Women suck with directions
    -Requires long periods of isolation

You get paid by the mile, and sometimes you get paid extra if you help unload the load, either with a pallet jack or whatever. When you start out, pay sucks, but if you stay and get your year or two years of experience, then the pay goes up and you get preference in what routes you want to drive. You can make a lot of money if you make good time.
