Today Harley-Davidson updated their Website with the 2018 models.

The Dyna line has gotten the axe.
If you were a fan of the Dyna’s condolences.

    Softail and Dyna are history
You read that right — they’re actually both dead and gone. The Softail, with its twin undertail pull-shocks and the Dyna with its exposed conventional units straddling the rear fender strut are both gone. The Softail name now encompasses previous Dyna and Softail models, but the name is the only part of the Softail that will be familiar to fans of the brand.

Harley and most other bike manufacturers are having a slump in sales because millennium’s don’t ride. At least that’s what the statistics say.

They use less fuel and in Aussieland you don’t need a supervising rider during L plates.

Personally, if I made my fortune and have money…I will buy a Kawasaki Ninja or Honda CBR…Perhaps I just like the speed and because a Harley I think is suited for riding in wide open vistas instead of small country roads….

I mostly ride for utility of costs and convienience of getting through heavy traffic. I also like to rescue old abandoned bikes and restore them on a budget.

One of the bikes I brought turned out to be an absolute Dog. Rotten Frame, Tank, Cycle parts, Bodged electrics, worn bearings (including the Head Cam bearing surfaces) seat ripped, not only the cover but also the foam underneath. I should of just scrapped it but perservered to make it usable. Nothing but trouble.

During this time I had an ok job so in frustration my wife said “Why don’t you just buy a new one?”

“Great” I thought headed to the dealer’s cash ready to see what was on offer.

    Three choices:

    Scooter/Moped………..Too small little power
125cc learner bikes…..Too small and restriced power by Law
Trail/Motorcross bikes…..Too tall for winter, Low gearing and limited range small tank
600cc SuperSports Missiles…..Too much power for winter riding, high fuel cost, High Maintainence.
1000cc plus Sports Tourer’s…..Too heavy, High Maintainence, High fuel costs.
Cruisers…….Same as 1000cc + Unwieldly in traffic, Bad riding posture for distances, small Tank.

I had the money and nothing to spend it on.

I needed a bike I could ride all year round. Low maintainence, Good Gas milage, Nible in Traffic, Enough power for the Freeway – up to 100mph, Comfortable riding position for distance including a comfortable seat, Simple to work on Motor and Cycle parts.

In the 70’s I could have brought a 400cc twin which would have been ideal. In the 2000’s all I had were leisure vehicles that were only designed to be ridden on sunny weekends for short distances. The cost of bikes now is also so high that they are thief magnets.

Consequenly I still ride my collection of 250cc Hondas that do almost all I need except the 100mph requirement.

All manufactuers seem to cater for the aspirational leisure market and not the guy who actually wants to use the bike as his main vehicle.

It seems that with Motorcycles, as in many areas of life, I’m just swimming against the Tide.

I read that they’re not buying cars either. Too expensive to own and maintain. Another reason was social media and texting. Millennials today don’t need to actually ‘go’ anywhere to visit friends…

I used to have a CBR 600 baby fireblade – cracking bike and really manoeuvrable , would like another one but now I’m approaching 50 not sure my back would cope with it too well.

I was thinking of a Triumph Tiger – anyone had experience of those ?

And men are deploying the most devastating weapon of all – indifference. In this final battle who cares least wins.
