I had to get a rental car for the first time in years. I got a 2017 Nissan Altima. It is an OK car, a little plastic feeling, but packed with technology.

Of course it is push to start and you must have the key fob in the car for it to work. So, what is the first thing I do? I lost the key fob. I knew it had to be in the car somewhere because I could still start it, so I left it alone and just didn’t lock the doors. /free car if you can find it/

Finally this morning I found the fob in the passenger side door storage pocket. How it got there I will never know. But, it made me think. This car will charge everything from cell phones to laptops, but there is no charger for the fob. if the batteries die you are screwed.

I am beginning to think that many of these modern amenities are engineered to fail. I have had the batteries die in my Chevrolet key fob and it was only a minor inconvenience. /no remote start/ But this damn car could leave you stuck at any time. Again, engineered to FAIL.

It’s always about the money. Get it out of your pocket and into theirs.

Things are set up to fail in today’s world. It’s a way to take your money. All you have to do is look at things like appliances. They used to last forever. Now they break within about 3 to 5 years after the purchase. smh

If a Nissan made you uncomfortable, a Tesla would drive you nuts. Keeping a hammer inside the car is a necessity in these cars. I haven’t seen into the classic market, but the direction in which car companies are headed, I would have to.

Funny you should say that. I have always dreamed of getting a Tesla, but after a small taste of this thing I don’t know if I could trust it. It’s not like I could get in a Tesla and drive it to Florida. What the hell do you do when you are in Macon GA with no where to charge. Plus, now I have to keep up with the house keys and the damn key fob.

Ya, this is why i keep my pre-tech’d out model year vehicle. I customer built it at the dealership and they had to make it special at the factory for me. But it has as little tech in it as possible, even the windows roll down old school style. The only tech i had them put in was a CD player which is now obsolete and cruise control.

Cars that auto break for you or auto swerve or auto park well ok auto parallel parking would be cool, and at the most extreme end auto-drive for you… no thanks. Internet connected cars when they now s~~~ about security… no thanks. 35 different computers monitoring a couple hundred sensors….. no thanks.

I don’t know what i’m going to do when this vehicle crosses over into high repair and maintenance age. I doubt i can buy a modern vehicle without all this BS technology everywhere.

When the Honda dies, I want to go back to the 80’s 90’s and get an old Cav’ UK members will know what I mean.

No Fuel injection, No airbags, No computers. Just a 1600cc motor, 5 speed box, 110mph and around 50mpg (uk 4.6litres) all day long.

The biggest problem with modern cars is that they are remotely hackable. I have heard Teslas are pretty safe. But cannot be sure about other companies.

How it got there I will never know.

Rental car? 1 G cornering? Keys went flying? I bet the sidewalls are scuffed from beading over during hard cornering.

That’s how I treat my rentals, every mile is an endurance test! Especially off road where the cops don’t see me!

I like my push to start. Had it since 2006 and well its been very nice to have. I doubt I will buy anything in the future that is not push to start.

excluding off road vehicles as simple is always better with those.

I used to have a push start Lambretta. You turned the ignition, the put it in 2nd gear, held in the clutch, then pushed as hard and fast as you could and dropped the clutch to start it. so nothing new I guess:

One more kicker here. I just read the tags on the fob. $225.00 if you lose it.

Wow. I can have a key copy made for a few bucks!

I feel SAFER already! I feel safe when I’m with my own kind!

You won’t see me reaching for the passenger brake and steering wheel, I’m in b~~~~ deep and I’ll be your SPOTTER! I’ll look ahead and tell you what’s coming, you just keep the car on the road!

    10-4 brother. You got shotgun.

Later I think I will try the neutral drop. Back it up, get it rolling in reverse, put it in neutral rev to 7k rpms and drop it into drive. White smoke those mutherf~~~ers!

That is exactly how the key fob pos got there, he threw them onto the passenger seat then while cornering they jumped in there, I have had that happen a couple dozen times with things I threw on the passenger seat…I corner like a madman on country roads and pray for rain all the time so that I can let the back end kick out sideways with ease when the mood strikes me (no front wheel drive bulls~~~). I actually prefer roll up windows and everything as basic as possible, none of this new car no key bulls~~~ for me, ever. Cars from the 80’s are where technology intersected and peaked with reliability, ease of use, and simple to repair/maintain.

If the battery dies you pop in a new one and it still works. The solution is to keep a couple spare button batteries in the glove box/console. They last 2-3 years depending on how often you are driving and using the fob buttons/features.
