    Unit is less than three years old.
    Solid state Honeywell thermostat lost
    display.
    I removed thermostat from mount and found
    it had no batteries but a place for two AA
    type batteries.
    Put two new batteries in and the display looks fine
    but unit will not come on in any mode. Heat or cool
    It is a natural gas furnace and air conditioner made by CARRIER.

    I noticed that the thermostat had nine (9) pins
    The mount that it snaps into says the pin labeled
    (C) was optional with batteries.
    Since there were no batteries when I took it off the wall and it was working fine, Suggested pin (C) supplied DC current back to the thermostat.
    A small blue wire was attached to pin (C)
    I traced that wire back to the unit circuit board and
    found it attached to a terminal labeled 24v.

    I have tested the main power into both the inside and outside units. They both have power.
    The unit will not come on even in fan only mode.
    No Heat or Cool.

    Strapped for cash and sure it is something simple
    I am overlooking.

    Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!!

    For now I am going with my gut feeling and heading to the Honeywell website listed and will call their 1-800
    number.

    Thanks ahead for any help!

    love and respect to all

    Something such as dirty air filter restricting flow can cause unit trip .. be sure to replace air filter to allow required airflow. I change filter every four weeks during winter.

    Did you have a lightning storm?

    Lightning can trip breaker. My DSL phone splitter in the outdoor wall service box blows so often that last year alone, I went through four or five of them. I keep about six on hand to replace .. and don’t even try and notify phone company anymore when line goes dead. I also lose about half a dozen phone surge protectors per year inside the house. About every other nearby thunderstorm sends a surge in. The joys of living on top of a hill with lightning .. and at the very end of the phone line .. even though it’s buried .. I still absorb the “best” surges.

    Often, just the phone side of splitter blows and I still have useable DSL. Phone company says it’s just as easy to replace splitters as to put surge protection ahead of it and replace that every time. Have cellphone but limited sources for web without DSL .. someday I’ll get rid of phone line altogether. Landline is a real pain. I have a whole house AC protector at the breaker panel.

    After changing air filter. Carefully check breaker panel in house to see if one marked furnace has tripped. If breaker is still on or has now been re-set …
    Then, you can go to furnace .. there is an electrical switch mounted somewhere on “outside” of furnace near access door. Looks like a normal light switch. Turn that switch off and wait about three minutes .. a few minutes. Turn switch back on and then after a few minutes .. you can tell if system has been re-set and working.

    The times my Carrier didn’t re-set .. was when it had a failed igniter .. and the other was when the condensate drain collector was plugged and needed to be opened.

    This may help,

    To diagnose your problem

    Some friends and I were talking about this the other day with one being a HVAC tech.

    Sometimes the themostat unit fails and you need to get a new one.

    Sometimes the physical connections between the thermostat unit and the hvac unit get disrupted.

    Check the base the thermostat unit pops/snaps into, the wires underneath going to the hvac unit may be loose or broken. Clean the metal conection areas on the thermostat unit where it clicks into its housing. Sometimes dust builds up between the thermostat unit and its base and esentially stops signals going from the thermostat to the hvac.

    I know this seems like a no brainer but does your furnace have all the panels on? Your furnace has an interlock that cuts power when the blower compartment panel is removed.

    Either way the T-Stat losing the display until you put in batteries suggests your furnace does not have power for whatever reason. Hmskld gave some good troubleshooting tips.

    Sounds like 99% of AC repairmen lol. Damn near autistic, totally unsocial, reek of tobacco or hangover, but are genius when it comes to knowledge of AC system.

    yeah, this guy has the shakes, and he uses a lot of duck tape, says sheet metal screws are the devil.

    But he’ll work expensively.

    says sheet metal screws are the devil.

    LOL! I use to do HVAC work. I was never very good at the residential stuff. I was much better at cold beverage machines.

    Dodgy and shaky, sounds just like me. 🙂

    And yes, sheet metal screws are the devil.

    I wonder what the mileage upcharge will be from the sex addiction clinic to harpo’s house will be?

    Sex Addiction & Sexual Disorders Treatment Program

    He sent me a postcard from here a couple days ago. He said they use “Hammer the Peg” technique…something new from the UK. I have heard this was a good way.

    Those pins are sometimes the problem, mine took a little wiggling and pressing at the same time to make a sufficient contact, sounds like the unit ran off the heating system’s 24v transformer and the batteries shouldn’t effect it unless they’re being delivered 24v somehow, in which case you’ll know when they explode! I’m betting the porcupine terminal has a loose quill.

    You guys are always good for a laugh.
    Yes Gru I put tape on the door relay switch
    turned the unit on with fan on and nothing
    at the unit happened. although the thermostat
    does click.

    I obtained a better test meter and found the thermostat is not sending signal to the fan motor.
    Finally had to jump power to the motor and it will run
    without hand turning it.
    This eliminated the possibility of bad capacitor or
    motor itself.

    I believe It has to be a bad circuit board or bad thermostat.

    Did have lightning storm but power is getting to unit.
    Breakers are good. Not tripped.

    When I put batteries in the thermostat it has display
    on or off the wall and clicks when fan is turned on.

    without batteries it has nothing.
    testing the pins with meter shows no voltage
    Shorting “R” to the “G” terminal should start fan
    even without thermostat. Does nothing, making me think it could be a bad circuit board.

    MGtower no loose quill. Only 7 of the 9 pins are being used and TWO of them are jumpered so act as one they are the power supply to the others. Terminals are as follows “R” and “RC” is jumpered and supply 24v to others as needed.
    “Y” terminal is compressor so setting thermostat
    to cool should send 24v through that wire.
    this should turn on outside compressor and outside fan motor as well as blower motor inside air circulation unit. Blower motor is on the “G” terminal and is energized with 24v in heat or cool setting or just fan only mode.
    “W” is for the furnace.
    “C” is called COMMON and is used to hardwire
    thermostat to house power and have no need for batteries. (this is the way it was installed)
    terminal “C” says optional with batteries.
    “O/B” terminal is for a reversing valve.
    (not knowledgeable about this pin yet)
    The other two pins are not used for my unit
    although I do know they are for second stage heating and cooling. Low fire to high fire heating and multi stage compressors.

    R= power
    RC= power jumped to R
    Y= cooling
    W=heating
    C= common used to hardwire thermostat to house ac
    O/B= reversing valve ? ? ?
    G= blower fan
    Y2=second stage cooling (NA) not used on my unit
    W2=second stage heating (NA) ”

    Maybe I should just find a trade school and take HVAC
    HA! HA! HA!

    Called the company that installed it and all parts are still warrantied. 5 years so no cost for parts.

    weekend service calls are 149$ weekdays 69$

    Hate that I will be at work when they come tomorrow
    would love to get in the way and ask some stupid questions.

    Thanks guys. I do love you all
