Thanks to that parakeet-rape-topic I felt I wanted to talk about my pet.
Currently I have a barred parakeet named Tali. She’s a sweet 4-year old little bird, about 6.5 inches from beak to tailtip, very cuddly and mimicks lots of whistles and clicks I repeated over and over again during the past four years.
I tried adding two new barred parakeets over the years, the first one two years ago. That one was female, just like Tali, and it was hell on earth for a week before I decided to take my loss and returned her to the breeder I bought her from. Tali was just too jealous and territorial (sounds familiar?)
The second bird was a male barred parakeet and I thought Tali would be more chill about it since she’d have a male playbuddy. I was wrong. Tali was a total bitch to him, which caused the new guy, named Garrus (+1 if you recognize the names without googling), to sit in a corner in his small cage and spend his day staring at me and her. Sent him back to the breeder after two weeks.
I said pet(s) in the title, and here’s the reason why: I’ve always felt like I wanted to have a big bird, but started with canaries and parakeets to get a feel for their behavior, and now I think it’s time to “upgrade”. I’ve talked to a breeder and he’ll get a regent parrot for me.
A size comparison, just to show you how big those f~~~ers are: an average parakeet is 17 cm/6.5 inches from beak to tailtip, a regent parrot (parrot’s in the description, though it counts as a parakeet) can be 35 to 45 cm/14,5 to 17,5 inches. An average parakeet weighs up to 45 grams/1.6 oz, a regent parrot weighs around 175 grams/6.3 oz.
Quite a difference, eh? 😀
Here’s my Tali:

And here’s the average regent parrot:
Now let’s do a size comparison, I’m showing a picture from a dude who has a mixture of different birds living at his place:

(Left: regent parakeet. Second: barred parakeet)In-f~~~ing-sane, isn’t it?! I’m gonna have me a birdie who’s three times as large, has three times the wingspan and three times the weight of Tali! I’m really thrilled about it, that’s why I wanted to share this with you guys 😀 He’ll be here in 2 to 4 weeks, which means I have plenty of time to buy a large parrot cage, toys, food, branches, etc etc.
Nerevar out, as it’s 3:40am here and I’m out of booze. Heh.

Anonymous43the bigger bird will rape you in your sleep.
you have been warned.
lol
nice birds brother.
I LOVE parrots. But after living with a number of them, I swear I’ll never live with one again. I’ve got a fine zoo with great, free flying parrots in several aviaries a short stroll from my house, so they will have to do.
But congrats on your new bird. Post some pics when he arrives.
I love most animals.

The big one is actually pretty quiet, atleast that’s what I’ve heard in vids and from others who have regent parrots 🙂

Don’t underestimate the benefit of having or getting a pet. When you’re stressed or under considerable pressure (as in going through a divorce), a good, loyal pet beats the best meds…

True that!
