Excellent topic! I had no idea it was this bad, but I’m not at all surprised. I used to watch Korean cinema before it went completely bats~~~ crazy. Now I can’t find a single movie or TV series that doesn’t open with some chick beating up 100 guys at once. The linked article does not address one important aspect distinguishing between the decrease in birth rate in North Korea and the decrease seen in Western populations: out-of-wedlock births. North Korea probably doesn’t have much of it compared to the West. I doubt that Korean society condones illegitimacy and I doubt even more that the government supports it in the form of social welfare spending or distribution of other resources.

The West, on the other hand, has largely made peace with illegitimacy as a social fact of life and the government supports it generously when compared with places like North Korea.

The result: North Korea has to promote marriage in order to increase its population. This is a much harder sell because it requires men and women to buy into marriage

and

childrearing

, whereas the West has already disentangled the two.

One more observation: it’s no accident that those obligated to participate in the dating exercises are Korea’s university students,

i.e.

, those most likely to produce good incomes and raise bright productive children. This shows a good example of a government furthering its goals by imposing the associated burden on its men.

If I can figure this out, I imagine that Korean university students can as well.
