Several hours after sending an eBay buyer her invoice on the computer I thought I had sold, she emailed me back saying that someone (probably a kid) took her phone and plugged in a phony offer. My computer still did not sell. 11 months and constant readjusting of my price and I’m sadly still in it.

I’m a little upset, because I was just about to put that money towards a new 4K UHDTV and now it still has to wait.

I am curious. What are the specs on the computer you are selling?

Get a 13″ black and white tube TV.
    You will hate it.
You will not give it time or attention.
    You will be better off.

What was the demo-graph of your target customer? E-bay is a bit of a dice throw may I suggest advertising to your specific target.

What makes your computer worth the 600 bucks is my question? Isn’t building your own PC cheaper then 600 bucks? none the less being able to buy a ps4 pro or an xbox one?

Just an east coast asshole who likes to curse, If you get offended by words like fuck, cunt, shit, piss, bitch or any racial slurs then you just scroll down.

I recently got f~~~ed on some counterfeit software. They refunded my money very quickly. This was the first time in 17 years of using eBay that I got screwed.

I don’t like selling on eBay though.

You’ve been told this before but I’ll say it again. Your computer uses OLD, OUTDATED components and you’re charging what it would cost for a nice up to date model. The only hope you have is that some clueless idiot comes by and decides to buy it, which isn’t likely. I would do a MAX price of $500, but likely you’ll have to sell it for $400 or $450. As a computer technician, your system is worth about $250 in trade in value at my shop. $150 to $200 cash value.

People do this all the time. Instead of asking what something is actually WORTH, they ask themselves how much they WANT. News flash. It’s a selfish world out there. NOBODY gives a s~~~ what YOU want. What matters is what it’s actually worth on the open market. People do this with everything from old computers to cars. Just like a car, as soon as you drive it off the lot it loses a lot of value. As soon as you open those parts and assemble the unit, it loses at least 20% of it’s value.

Even a professional shop like me offering a full warranty and everything can barely clear $100 profit selling a custom built system on eBay. I can net at least $200 to $500 profit selling a brand new custom computer in my shop, but there’s no way for me to do that on eBay because competition is too intense.

If you think that’s bad, the margins in the tech industry are BLOODY FREAKING AWFUL! Your CX750 sells for about $80 on Newegg. You know how much I can get it for wholesale if I buy 100 units? $79.84. That’s a 0.002% margin. Newegg basically IS wholesale. Same story with Amazon and eBay. There is absolutely NO margin when selling something online.

This is why the internet is killing businesses all over the world. There will always be someone dumb enough to sell for less than you. Now Newegg isn’t dumb, but they sell 2,000 CX750’s per day, so they’re making $320/day just from that ONE product. But can I as a small shop compete with that? HELL NO! I sell the CX750 for the MSRP of $99.99 in my shop.
