I’m having dinner at Panera, chilling after hitting a bookstore

side bar, I have to tell you brothers, driving 180 miles to get to a bookstore was really getting old when I lived in Kansas.

Great book btw. I finished my drink, and got refill, again ignoring the woman, this time I catch her out of the corner of my eye looking at me up and down, again checking me out but I give her nothing.

Back to my book and coffee cake. Then she comes over to where I am sitting and ask if she can sit. fine. Brothers, this was a solid 8, someone who would never give me the time of day, maybe she is 33? blonde, but nothing special, and she asked me why I didn’t look her over like some rapacious savage beast-man, was she not pretty enough for me to even look at.

I was truly startled by this…What was wrong with her that I wouldn’t look at her?

I didn’t say a word, but held up my right hand. On my right middle finger is a black tungsten ring. She looked at the hand and said “you are married?”…nope. look again, use your smart phone to see why I am not interested in you. Oh she said, “you are gay?” nope, look it up on the phone.

she tapped on the smart phone and came up with the answer…

ohhhhhhhh the light went on. “Sorry to bother you,” she said, “I’m not in the habit of men just flat out ignoring me completely. Everyone tells me how beautiful and how special I am. It never occurred to me that anyone would just not be interested in me at all.”

so now she is curious as to how I want to have nothing to do with her. She asks me “what it is like to have no interest in women, how is that even possible?” I gave her a shrug, and went back to my book. “But I spent money on make up, hair, look at my body, I work out every day, I am a good looking woman and you ignore me?” She was getting flustered, and a little too loud for someone having a one sided conversation, and other people were looking at me like I was some sort of rapacious man-beast.

I just kept reading my book, reading about men fighting a war at 25000 feet.

Well, she called me a few names, and stamped her foot and was getting really mad when an older woman came over and saved me from further indignities. Other woman told her to leave me alone, I was there reading peacefully before she came along and to go back to your own table. I looked up and winked and smiled at my savior.

lol the store manager came over, and Grandma told the manager this woman was pestering me. Manager asked the woman to leave the restaurant. After she stormed off, gathered up her s~~~ and left cursing and yelling, the manager came over to apologize and gave me a $25 gift card. He came back with a pen and note pad and wrote up some sort of incident report “Just in case” he said. He made a note with the time, for the video cameras.

He gave Grandma a $25 card too. Grandma saw the book I was reading and told me her two brothers and her husband were all crewmen on bombers during WW2, and we had a nice chat about them. I thanked her for helping me out, and she told me I was smart for not saying anything to “that bitch.” she excused her self for saying bitch…I loved it. She had come across those “liberated women” before and thought they were stupid in the 1970’s and more stupid now.

Brothers, I liked Grandma, a real woman from a time when women were women.

Also, what book is that? Sounds like a good one.

I recommend “A Higher Call” – it is about a WWII B-17 bomber crew facing down with a German BF-109; that was one of the last wars that had a true sense of honor, and that event was no exception. That and “Flyboys” are two of the most powerful historical period books I’ve read in my time.

my greatest inspiration is Unbroken. I used to read Unbroken while waiting for my turn in court, and the bailiff took three copies away from me.

I love reading about how ordinary men rose up to do their duty to protect his country with honor and integrity. something sorely missing today.
