Computer Scientists Close In on Perfect, Hack-Proof Code https://www.wired.com/2016/09/computer-scientists-close-perfect-hack-proof-code/

This is fascinating! I had no idea such a thing was even possible. We may live to see a day when computer viruses are extinct. Maybe.

Everything (in computers) is only hack-proof until someone smarter does not hack it.
In fact, the only part of a computer, that can not be hacked by malicious instructions, is the power supply unit and maybe the monitor and keyboard and analog headphones. Anything, that is a general purpose device and runs a software code for the features, can be hacked (in theory.) The advantage of the variable software code running on a general purpose processor, is a huge disadvantage when it comes to hacking.

The article also says “buffer overflow errors” which is a known method of hacking, one can insert malicious code in the overflown part. And in programming, one passes pointers of buffers around. And in most cases, nothing really checks, if the correct type and amount of data is written there. Or if the operating system notices it, then the whole program crashes. Better to detect and handle it in advance, with an error message.

So, an old FM-radio or an old analog TV or your flash light cannot be hacked, since the features are given by the components soldered on the circuit board, and there is no “code” running on general purpose CPU. Any modification needs physical access to solder new stuff inside.

On computers, maybe hacking can be made harder, but unhackable computer code does not exist. Maybe, running a write-once live CD with no hard disk or other storage, then at least there is no malware remaining after reboot. But if there is RAM (temporary storage) where bad instructions can be put, than it can be hacked again.

Until humans develop software code full of errors, there will always be hacking. Only automated tests can detect, if a software can take all the s~~~ty input data and parameters and not get hacked.

And, in the referred article, it is about remote hacking through the network connections. If one has physical access, one can simply put in a new computer with his own code, and wire up the stuff. Takes lot of time, but may be possible.

I like how the article put emphasis on female coders, lol

I have a respect for programmers,it’s a tedious f~~~ing job (I had to do basic code in high school) that not
    every one is up to.

Talk to me about Options,Derivatives, buying on Margin
or Futures but code makes my eyes glaze over.

Never say never. There are people that said man would never fly, and here we are. It’s only “unhackable” until someone hacks it, and there are plenty of people out there who can give it a try.

Some people thought the Titanic couldn’t sink, and it did. There will be some loophole somewhere and hackers will exploit it, corrupt it, or maybe even change the code. Where there’s a will, there’s a way, and if they’re using this in drones and military aircraft then plenty of people will have a vested interest in hacking it.

    To name a few…

    China
    North Korea
    Russia

I think only quantum computers will really be able as they will use “spooky action at a distance” quantum entanglement to do it.

that can not be hacked by malicious instructions, is the power supply

If it is linked to the system like corsair have done. You might be able to update the code on the microcontroler, thus you can just the frequency of the transformers.
Disable the fan, remove the software cuts offs and gradually lower the frequency and wait for the fires to start.
