Someone on this forum started a thread on this book, many moons ago. I can not find the thread or remember the man’s name. I apologize because he deserves the credit.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/0691070555/Men Going Their Own Way have been part of life in North America since the early 1600s. They called us “bachelors” back then.
The book deserves its praise on its Amazon page. Anything I say can not improve on that. My only complaint is that it is written in a stilted academic style, which is understandable and excusable.

I was – and still am – called a bachelor since the good old days.
I am sure this goes way back to Europe before Christianity.There is a series on this here. Note that it is one-sided and incomplete.
