Plato was a poet before he met Socrates, but after hearing Socrates teach, he went home and burned all his poetry. After that, he was Socrates’ best and most famous student, and arguably surpassed his master with his writings (though all are written as dialogues with Socrates himself as the main speaker, raising the question of how much of Plato’s ideas came from Socrates, and how many are his own).

    1. The “Symposium,” one of Plato’s most famous works, is a discussion by several philosophers about the true nature of love. Each character gives his own opinion, one of the worst coming from Aristophanes (the man who got Socrates killed with a slanderous play about him), who thought that men are really only half of a human, and they need a woman in their lives to complete them and make them whole. Plato (in the mouth of Socrates) argued against this, claiming that the highest love is love of truth and knowledge. Plato incidentally never married.

    2. The “Republic,” another one of Plato’s famous writings, contains the infamous argument that women should be required to fight alongside men in times of war. In my opinion, this claim should be taken as tongue-in-cheek, as many of Plato’s arguments (as Aristotle, his student, argued). Aristotle famously claimed that the downfall of Sparta was the licentiousness of their constantly complaining women. Plato’s argument should be taken as a response to this problem, which was noticeable in his own time: if the women have nothing better to do than sit at home and complain while their husbands are fighting for their lives, they should be required to fight as well.

THE REPUBLIC!!! Greatest political novel in history, right behind the Prince by Machiavelli. If it wasnt for me learning about these philosophers, i probably wouldn’t be the political animal i am now. I wish I had the opportunity to sit under Plato as one of his apprentices back then. Dude was a wealth of knowledge.

It should be noted that Socrates and Plato disagreed on a lot of various issues.

Also, on a side note, Diogenes criticized many of Plato’s writings. And Diogenes was known to interrupt lectures given to Socrates in a forum.

Yes. Diogenes was the first forum troll. Or, he was one of the earliest known cases in ancient writings.

I believe you have your facts confused. Diogenes was a huge fan of Socrates. But he was not fond of Plato, and often ate very noisily during Plato’s lectures to disrupt them.

They are great and very thought provoking. I also find them to be intriguing in a horrible way. Utopian thinking frightens me. The Republic would be a nightmare if implemented in reality, much like Communism was. Machiavelli is interesting, but the ends most certainly do not justify the means. Only a Psychopath thinks in this way, completely amoral.

Indeed, and I suspect Plato would be the first to agree with you. As I noted before, many of Plato’s (Socrates’) recommendations about the so-called ideal society should be taken as tongue-in-cheek critiques of corrupt societal standards in Greece at the time.
