A comment on a different thread inspired me to write a quick post about a western philosopher. There are a lot of bulls~~~ philosophers out there, and sometimes very intelligent men are turned off by philosophy because their exposure to it is limited to mediocre (usually modern) works. However, I am very passionate about philosophy, and I’ve always felt an urge to spread the love for things I enjoy to enrich people’s lives (that’s why I’m a teacher).
So here are a few famous stories you might like about a Greek philosopher named Diogenes. Diogenes was a cynic and highly critical of societal values and conventions. He would sleep in jars on the street and p~~~ in public just to troll people.
(1) He was known for walking around Athens in broad daylight with a lantern. When asked what he was doing, he would respond, “I’m looking for an honest man.”
(2) Plato’s students came up with a definition of man: “A featherless biped.” When Diogenes heard this, he plucked all the feathers off a chicken, went to the Academy, and through it down on the ground saying, “I have brought you a man.”
(3) Alexander the Great was so fascinated by stories about Diogenes that he went to visit him. He found him poking a stick in a pile of bones. When he asked what he was doing, Diogenes said, “I’m looking for the bones of your father, but I can’t tell them apart from the bones of a slave.”
(4) When Alexander asked Diogenes if he could do the philosopher any favors, Diogenes, who was reclining in the open, said, “Yes, you’re blocking my sunlight.”

Anonymous6Platos Republic is a f~~~ing amazing BOOK!!!!!
Diogenes might have been the first MGTOW. Or, he was the first hippie. It depends on your point of view. And the one person of that age whom saw whom Diogenes truly was happened to be the most successful conqueror of that time, Alexander the Great.
After Alexander met with Diogenes, Alexander commented that if he was not Alexander, he would want to be Diogenes. Because, Alexander realized that Diogenes had freed himself of all responsibilities and expectations. Diogenes was free to be himself. Even Alexander had responsibilities, while Diogenes had no responsibilities to anyone.

Absolutely. Maybe later I’ll jot down a few of Plato’s sayings (or Socrates’ depending on how you look at it).

I remember this story. Alexander was a pupil of Aristotle for a time, so he knew what he was talking about.

Anonymous18Often belief in philosophy comes before belief in independent thought in our times.
To think freely is a gift.
Apologies for diversion but Sherlock Holmes’ brother, Mycroft Holmes, comes to mind.
