I thought it would be useful for guys to chat about their art of choice or if anyone was interested in starting to have a place to ask questions.

Currently I train in Kendo (samurai sword) and Modern Arnis (empty hand / stick based). I wanted to give jujitsu and aikido a try but a recent back surgery has forced me to be more cautious.

Kendo has been the goal since I was 9 but having time, money, health line up didn’t happen till most recently. I chose Arnis for a more practical form of self defense since there are no open carry laws for samurai swords haha.

Any other martial art practitioners out there?

I thought what I'd do was I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes...or should I?

I used to Kickbox years ago. Not these days.

I thought i was half decent at sparring until a non english speaking guy turned up and did Wing Chun. That guy was a badass.

I spent decades practicing hand to hand. My first teacher was a K-fu expert and close personal friend, I practiced with experts for many years, shin/foot pads, gloves, and face protection, we went fill at it and sometimes and knocked the wind out of each other and sometimes a little blood. I Also learned about biomechanics and vulnerabilities (where to poke the holes, tear the ligaments, and break the bones). I can handle knives, swords, chucks, and guns.

I can f~~~ someone up real bad fast if I needed to, otherwise I’m the sweetest guy you’ve ever known….

For self-defense, I practice the best arts, which are “know where you go” and “know who you hang out with”.

I used to practice BJJ (blue belt team 4life) and chinese boxing a little too much (could be doing better if I was reading books instead of practicing under rain with a tree). Had enough lessons to be competent in judo, but it was to difficult to me. Did a few weeks of foil fencing at military school, but left because Colonel Jackass owned all gear.

I was looking to learn archery and any melee, like eskrima or kendo (something something something unhealthy end of the world obsession), but couldn’t find any reliable place close to home to do so.

I’m too clumsy to learn firearms.

Haha, man that sounds like the start of most kung-fu movies. You ever think of getting back into it?

Oh now that sounds like fun. Kendo is “full contact” but its more of a game of tag with the focus of speed chess. We do get some physicality during the hand to hand stuff but not nearly as intense as what you’ve done. Its on thing to train for a fight and another to actually fight.

Same here on the biomechanics, I’ve searched like crazy for that stuff. Right now working on getting my breathing in line with movements. Sounds simple enough but everything moves so fast the timing takes time to develop. The ranking in Kendo would take 36 years at the earliest to go from 1-8th dan.

Nice man, I had to look that up. Look very practical and mix of all things deadly. How long you been doing that?

    Combat Hapkido,

About one year. My school is very practical. Minimum time in grade but you can move up if you can do it. If you can do it.

Krav Maga looks good too. but no one around here does that.

I never cared about belts, can you do it. Will it save your life. A black belt means nothing if you can’t do it when it counts.

    @The Laughing Man

I’ve thought about taking up Wing Chun from time to time.

The problem these days is that i barely get to fit everything in that i want to do as it is.

The days are just too damn short and being single is just too much fun.

Target Focus Training for dealing with violent situations. I’m a Black belt in Tang Soo Do and Judo, trained to a lesser degree in many other styles. Nothing comes close to a weekend with TFT. Only problem is you can’t really practice it effectively. I grew up in a place where street fights were common and being a white guy made you a target, so I’ve been tested and wish I had those techniques earlier.

Don’t bother with the DVD’s, if you can’t attend a training it’s useless. The posters above have a good sense of styles you can train in without hamstringing yourself. Avoid MMA training like the plague, nothing they teach you to do is what you want to do in a real fight, if you look at the rules they basically disqualify anything that works.

Twenty years ago I practiced TaeKwonDo and Aikido.
Now I am in Karate and HEMA.
I really liked Aikido, and I would keep practicing it if possible. But in this small Island Karate is the only thing we have.
