But the Wildrose constitution requires that any major change be approved by more than three-quarters of members. Supporters of unity were confident they had the support of a majority from the 43,000 party member eligible to vote, but weren’t as sure they would get to 75 per cent. In the end, 57 per cent of eligible Wildrose voters cast a ballot – 23,466 in favour, and 1,132 against. The PCs got 55-per-cent turnout from more than 50,000 eligible members.

These are the numbers that I was waiting to see. We’ve got a 95% approval from a 57% and 55% voter turnout respectively. We got a slightly higher percentage from the Wildrose membership with both the approval and voter turnout than from the PC membership and yet it was the Wildrose membership vote that had everyone on edge. They were the ones most likely to scrap the deal and yet they were the ones who showed the strongest support.

I think it’s safe to say the ‘grassroots’ from both legacy parties might not be totally thrilled about the merger but they know that it was necessary in order to ensure that the Notley NDP government is crushed in the next provincial election.

They might not admit it, but I think that the percentages even shocked both legacy party leaders. I know that it far exceeded my expectations. I was thinking that an 80% approval from the Wildrose membership would have been the absolute highest rating possible. Especially with all the negativity concerning the ratification in the MSM prior to the vote. I was worried, as were many others, that the Wildrose was even going to get the necessary 75% approval. I think that the 95.4% approval from the Wildrose says a lot about how badly they want the NDP gone…

Well that isn’t likely. At least not in the next federal election. The merger of the two right wing parties in Alberta means the current ruling NDP party will be gone in the next provincial election. Alberta itself will again have a Conservative government.

Canada, as a country, is f~~~ed. Alberta with a strong majority Conservative party in power is the best that we can hope for in the foreseeable future. Alberta will certainly not kowtow to Turdeau…

The overwhelming verdict is much bigger than almost all Wildrosers predicted. The number is read out. 95.4%. What? 95.4%. Yes, more than 95% of Wildrosers agree to unite with the PCs, their former political foe. Wildrose Leader Brian Jean says the 95% is beyond what he expected. Jean uses words like amazing and wow.

Evidently I was not the only one who was surprised… 🙂

On CBC Radio Canada this morning, leader of the Alberta Conservatives Jason Kenney announced that if he is not elected leader of the new UCP he’ll fully support whoever is.

He’s rightfully acknowledging and respecting the wishes of the Wildrose membership who many want to see Brian Jean as the next premier of Alberta. Kenney is bending over backward to appease the Wildrose membership and maintain a sense of unity within the new UCP.

No news yet reference a statement from NDP leader Rachel Notley. Insider rumours tell us that she had locked herself in the bathroom late last night and has yet to come out…
