Today’s mail brought me the DVD of Magnificent Seven! It’s unboxed and about to be binge watched. Blood and guts, and no girls allowed!

(Pray excuse all the exclamation points! I’m in an ebullient mood!)

It is based on Seven Samurai. I have a “restored” copy of this one too. I’ve seen it so many times, that it is practically memorized. “Oh yeah, he’s gonna do that!”

    Love that flick!

However—favorite western of all time is a toss up:

    a) Wild Bunch
    b) Searchers
    c) Outlaw Josey Wales
    d) The Good/Bad/Ugly

Tough call! How about A Fistful of Dollars which is based on another Kurosawa / Mifune classic, Yojimbo?

As for me, I’m a non-discriminating diversity kind of guy. I watch them all!

I love both the fist full movies—but I really think my favorite Clint movie is either: Dirty Harry or Kelly’s Heros.

Where are actors of that caliber today? Or for that matter James Coburn, et al from M7.

There is something about the old westerns that can’t be matched in any other films. For me, it’s very subtle attraction of the noisy old wooden sidewalks combined with the jingle of boots and spurs; the buildings with echoey interiors and sparse decor. Also, the furnishings in those rooms are sometimes quite gaudy .. and that’s the way it should be if the set director did their job. They used to order most items by catalog in the west and because of the bare living conditions always seemed to go a little heavy on the ornamentation of couches, drapes and the often seen use of red velvet. The kerosene table top lamps with ornamental shades; very elaborate for the west as are the chairs and couches even in the simplest old wooden hotel. An old western room should echo .. it should also look like someone dropped in a bunch of furniture items from the East Coast .. and the split front doors with long vertical imported glass .. that etched frosted glass .. always hurts a little to see those windows get broken, but they usually do get broken, and that’s ok.

Love me some westerns — the old ones and the new ones.

If any of yous guys make it down to Tucson, Arizona way, make sure you visit Old Tucson Studios where they made a couple of hundred of our favorite old westerns.

I was referring to the Yul Brynner “original” with its all star cast. I have not seen any of the sequels or remakes.

As I write, Seven Samurai is queued up in my DVD player. I’m going to binge on it for the next three hours or so.

    Bye!

    Don’t forget Sanjuro.

Also The Hidden Fortress, which Lucas ripped off for Star Wars. That’s why the Star Wars franchise has failed it so damn hard of late. Lucas stopped copying older, better filmmakers and started using his own ideas (and retarded politics) in his films.
