For Debbie Solsman, it was a no-brainer.

When students at Denver Place Elementary School in Wilmington, Ohio, couldn’t afford to pay for their food, Solsman — who had worked in the school cafeteria for 14 years — said she covered the cost out of her own pocket right then and there or wrote IOUs, put them in the cash register and paid them off with her next paycheck.

But that didn’t sit well with the Wilmington City School District, which quietly fired Solsman in February for her actions, WXIX-TV reported.

Solsman said she’d give students food even after they ate their lunches.

“I sometimes would buy them an extra slice of pizza,” she told WXIX, “because I did feel them out, ask them what they had for supper the night before. Sometimes they would tell me ‘nothing.’”

WXIX reported that students can get three lunches on credit. If they don’t have money after that, the station said students still get lunches, but instead of regular entrées they get cheese sandwiches.

The official reason for Solsman’s firing was “failure to account for food sales at [her] cashier job in the cafeteria and providing food without payment to [her] grandchildren,” WXIX said.

“I do admit to wrongdoing,” she told WXIX. “I broke the rules.” She acknowledged to the station that she “fed children and my grandchildren out of my own pocket.”

But Solsman told WLWT-TV the turn of events have been “really hard for me” and she “felt like termination was a harsh punishment.”

Parent Serenity Mitchell agreed.

“Firing her over feeding kids, that’s a no go,” Mitchell told WLWT. “And our community is going to come together.”

Superintendent Ron Sexton told WLWT that “for people to make the district out as heartless to kids’ needs is the hardest part. We care a great deal about our employees, we care a great deal about the students.”

Despite her firing, Solsman told WXIX she’d do the same thing if she had the chance to work in the cafeteria again and students told her they were hungry.

“I miss them terribly,” she said between sobs, “and I love them very much.”

These are prison camps. Rule number one in prison camp discipline. Never show humanity to the inmate.

The protestant work ethic and the Christian tradition of limited charity are actually admirable, even if the rest of the bag is complete horse s~~~. This woman should be getting a fluff piece about how she’s on a fixed income working in a cafeteria, and instead of paying her own bills she’s sacrificing to feed hungry kids.

And on top of all that, those kids who couldn’t afford food don’t get publicly shamed and embarrassed in front of their class. I was that poor kid who couldn’t afford lunch. It sucks.

I have sympathy for the kids. They have no agency, they can’t get jobs of their own, and it’s really not their fault their mothers are whores who fundamentally fail at life. I advocate relocating children from deadbeat moms to their appreciative fathers and cutting off the child support. In the meantime, if a kid can’t afford lunch and somebody wants to buy it for them…who exactly is the victim?

It’s easy to “humanistic” when it’s other people’s money. I would be cool with it if she or a group other than the tax payers paid for the food. Why should it be okay to make other kids pay when others do not?

Same goes out for all the bleeding hearts on a so many levels. People bitch about the Government not spending money on the homeless, but you don’t see them going out and helping the homeless. People are bitching about little Hispanic kids being separated from their parents, but you don’t see anyone going South of the Border to fix the real issues.

It’s easy, so easy, to say what should and shouldn’t be done, but it’s totally something different when it’s your property, money, and time that is used to solve the problem.

And to her credit, this lunch lady was using her own time and money to solve what she saw as a problem. I think roadmaster is probably correct that there is more going on here than just lunches.

Maybe the cafeteria doesn’t want us to know what’s in the soylent green…

At the private school where I work, a number of Hispanics attend for free because on paper they’re below the poverty level. Of course the poverty index does not include child support, alimony, and government welfare as income. Many people living in “poverty” have a higher standard of living than most middle class Americans. These same kids that go to school for free and have no money for lunch are driving Mercedes and Cadillacs to school. I’m with Pete. F~~~ ’em all.

A couple of years ago our local parish priest was lamenting the poor/helpless/down trodden illegal aliens and admonished us all to dig deep into wallets and GIVE!

Fat chance. I told him that the the next spanish mass he should walk through the church parking lot and take a look at the vehicles parked there. ALL were relatively new and highly expensive. Not bad for poor/helpless and down-trodden hugh? F~~~ these parasites.
