Hey yall. Thanks lots and lots for ALL of your input. I’m still considering other cars, but idk why for some f~~~ing reason I love mazdas…they just look sporty and affordable? But yet I need to consider my budget, and especially reliability and fuel efficiency. For 3K should I get Toyota or Honda? I hear toyotas are very reliable, but what about fuel economy?
And are Chevys decent cars?

Repair bills can make short order hamburger out of fuel economy!
It’s nothing to drop $300 on a repair, try and fit 100 gallons of fuel in the tank, because that’s what you just lost in repairs!
Some vehicles are so expensive to operate that mileage economy wise you’ll save more money driving a fully laden big rig everywhere you go!
Mileage savings on a lemon is f~~~ing myth!

1967 BelAir with a 327 is the last “real car” they ever made!
As a car guy it pains me to say it but buy a Honda if you can not find then a good used Toyota. NOT there upper class versions. When it comes time to turn the wrench on the car it will cost less.
I love my BMW’s but parts are expensive and if you have someone else do the work even more so. Stay far away from Benz, Audi, and Porsche.
American, if you can find an older S10/blazer easy to work on lots of parts.

Model is more important than make. Toyota and Honda have both had their share of lemons.

Who owned the car before you is often more crucial than who built it. Even the most reliable car on paper can quickly become a busted out hoopty in the hands of, say, and incompetent ricer, often without so much as a scratch in the paint.
I may get a lot of flak for suggesting this, but there seem to be a LOT of very low mileage PT cruisers out there going dirt cheap (maybe from estate sales). Yaw, I know, PT Cruisers are a joke, but they were also mostly bought by anal retentive uptight white suburban grandparents who wanted to up their cool (and failed). Yes, uptight white suburban grandpas don’t know what cool is, but they do tend to stick to service schedules religiously and baby their cars. You know with a PT it hasn’t been, for example, burned out street racing.
That being said, I wonder if anyone has made a PT sleeper.

A burned tin can submersed in rock salt will last longer! No rust prevention in their designs, they must have missed galvanic corrosion classes in college.
But you’re right about the prior owner in most cases, but some cars are junk right off the assembly line. Case in point is the British Leland conglomeration when England decided to consolidate its automotive industry under one big socialized umbrella. They sold Triumph Spitfire as the “shape of things to come” (pontiac fiaro), with transmissions that openly sang out-loud because that’s how poorly they were built. Chances were that your brand new Triumph wouldn’t survive its first push toward the red-line, catastrophic gear train failure was common within the first few months of owning one. Unless you drove as if all the parts were brittle plastic it was in the shop more than out.
You can tell how well a car is designed and built by the amount mechanical noise and vibration you feel.
A s~~~box is a s~~~box and will always be a s~~~box.
I have a 1950 MG-TD roadster that I bought re-designed and manufactured parts to higher specifications and durability than OEM. I want to restore it and DRIVE it, Not twist the axles and sheer
them off at the pumpkin! (notorious for that)Stay away from s~~~boxes! The last thing you need is to pay all that money and more only to have to call someone else for a ride!
Looking to buy a used car
You must own a better Crystal ball than II third that. I’ve owned Honda Accords for 35 years and they are great and last forever.
Most recently I moved to the North East and changed my type to a Honda CRV, the Accord of SUV’s.
I will stay with Honda till I’m gone. I just love a well built reliable car.
Been through the sports car phase in my early 30’s and bought a Corvette. Black, convertable in Los Angeles.
It was f~~~ing awesome. If you want a sports car don’t give a s~~~ and get one.
I could only afford to own my Corvette for six months until the monthly insurance and maintanence drained me.
But have fun. Be careful. Hot cars really do draw hot chicks. Keep it wrapped!

You can find a car for 80-120k in Ontario for around $5,000 CND if you save up a bit more.
When buying a car make sure the owner gives you a UVIP package that can be purchased at any Service Ontario outlet.
When inspecting the car make sure it has no rust on the undercarriage, the seams between body panels, hood, trunk are evenly spaced and not out of alignment. If it is chances are it was in an accident. The interior for a 80-120k odometer reading should not have any rips, tears, or worn steering wheel or seat bolster. If you find any of these chances are either the motor was replaced or the odometer was replaced or changes somehow.
Finally this is the most important thing you can do if possible. Try to find a one owner vehicle with ALL service records. It will be harder to find at this price range but will be well worth it if you can. If the owner serviced their vehicle at a dealership they can print out the records for them to give to you. You want to see that they did oil changes on time and all maintenance according to the owners manual was performed for the current mileage it has.
If you are desperate you can find a 2nd owner vehicle easily enough so long as they had the car for 5 years or more and have all records of maintenance done you should be ok but still risky it would be better to find a one owner vehicle.
Use Kijiji or Autotrader and you can narrow your searches down to exact kilometers, price range, model of car you want.
Here is a quick example I found for you on Kijiji in Ontario (Link). You may have to travel a bit if you are in Kitchener ON but it would be worth it. Last car I bought was 2 hours away and lasted me for over 10 years.
One other thing I forgot try to stay away from female owned vehicles as women tend to not take good car of their cars.
Good luck in the search.

Yo Rhino, that Mazda SUV is 60,000 km for less than 4K. Seems a good deal! Are SUVs generally bad on fuel consumption or not necessarily?

You’ll get quite an education/comparison…all makes, all engines, all transmissions, (US).

Big three S~~~boxes! The resale value on my Toyota purchases have always been the highest! I Always sold them still running good and a history of impeccable reliability! With proper maintenance they last decades!
My 20 year old Toyota just passed inspection the other day! And it still looks reasonably well for its mileage! 175,000 and no major engine work and still runs powerful and smooth!
American engines would have driven the valves through their seats with connecting rods rapping and main bearings knocking!!!
Not exactly: Honda is actually 1st place among Japaneses, while Toyota is 3rd place. 2nd place being Subaru (though I wouldn’t recommend Subaru because their interiors use relatively cheap stuff for its price).

Ya, well, rock salt was one of the reasons I got the f~~~ out of Michigan.
they must have missed galvanic corrosion classes in Mexico.
fixed
I’m reasonably certain PTs all came out of the Toluca plant.
And yeah, I fully admit the PT is a crapbox that won’t last past its second timing belt. However I’m seeing ten year old grannywagon PTs out there with only 12k miles on them. Sure the thing is only good for 120k miles tops, but for just a few thousand you can have 90% of that and then toss it, no f~~~s given.
I’m assuming @russky2 isn’t looking for a ride to keep forever. I think he just wants something to get around for a few years while he builds up the cash to get something worth owning.
Are SUVs generally bad on fuel consumption or not necessarily?
Mazda SUVs get slightly lower mileage than an econobox coupe, but they’re nothing anywhere near as bad as a real SUV like a Ford Excursion.

Yeah, pretty much for ATM I’m looking for something to get more driving experience with. I wanna find something around 3K, but willing to save up to 5K. Now I do want a fuel efficient and reliable vehicle, but winters in Canakestan can be pretty brutal with snow burrying the roads. So an SUV is not out of the question, but needs to be fuel efficient.
I gotta say that you guys are awesome for all this info!!!

I’ve never owned anything but a full size SUV. When I get into a regular car, it feels like I’m sitting on a skateboard. I’ve also never purchased a new car. What I look at when I buy a used car is:
1. Service history – if it doesn’t have a full and COMPLETE service history DO NOT BUY IT! Any responsible car owner should retain ALL service records. It’s not hard. I have a “house” drawer and a “car” drawer in my kitchen. All my house and car records go in their respective drawers.
2. Mileage. It should have no more than 10,000 miles per year driven on it. You don’t want something that wasn’t taken care of and was driven hard its whole life. I just bought a 2009 Cadillac Escalade with less than 60,000 miles on it. It looks and smells NEW. Which brings me to my third point.
3. Physical condition. You do NOT want a car that was owned by a dirtbag. The car should be in IMMACULATE physical condition, with NO fake chemical smelling s~~~ to help cover up the stench. If you go to test drive a car and it smells like chemicals RUN AWAY! Do NOT fall for the “it’s the soap from the detailing place” line. That soap smell will be gone in a day or two. If they claim that it’s the soap, FEEL the carpets. If they’re not wet, then RUN AWAY! If they are wet, then take a whiff. If you can’t smell that exact smell, then RUN AWAY!
4. GET A THOROUGH INSPECTION! Take it to the dealership. DO NOT let the dealership actually do the work (they’re called STEALERships for a reason!), but they see that EXACT model of car every single day. They know what to look for, and they want to find as much s~~~ wrong with it as possible. Then take the inspection report back to the owner/dealer and negotiate the price of the vehicle to reflect the work that the dealership tells you it needs.
5. Get a vehicle history report and look for OPEN recalls based on your VIN #. If there are none, great. If there are any open recalls, you MUST take it to a DEALERSHIP to get these recalls addressed (Don’t worry, the repairs will be FREE!). If the recall is serious (for example, the vehicle bursts into flames or loses steering control or something), then it’s best to avoid that vehicle.
I’ve been buying used cars for years and I have NEVER been burned because I’ve followed these 5 points. It can take a while to find a vehicle if you stick to these rules religiously, but they’ll help you avoid a LOT of problems later down the road.
Buy what makes you happy. Life’s short. Buy something you want.
You are all alone. If you have been falsely accused of RAPE, DV, PLEASE let all men know about the people who did this. http://register-her.net/web/guest/home
Meh
It’s a matter of personal preference Russky2.
A lot of sound advice here though.
As you mention, the winters up here are somewhat long and can be brutal. I haven’t owned a “car” since 2002 when the little ford I bought started tracking a snow drift on the #1 and almost got sucked under a tractor trailer.
I buy V8/V6 4×4 trucks and SUV’s only (I’ll never buy a 4 cylinder unless its on a motorcycle), then I get the under carriages and rocker panels cleaned, rust proofed (sic) and under coated. I Run only mud and snow tires year round, and I am a bit CDO about maintenance because I dont like investing in anything that doesn’t perform to my wants and needs.
If you aren’t leaving the city, and dont mind feeling like your ass is leaving skid marks on the road or damaging the suspension due to “speed bumps”, a car should be adequate for your needs. There was a time in my life when I gave a fuck. Now you have to pay ME for it
