“Post choice.” I’m going to start using that.

On Tumblr (of course), I know a lot of women on their that consider themselves politically conservative and anti-feminist, but are strongly “pro-choice.” There’s something about that which bothers me. They give the usual “scientific” reasons why it’s not killing a child and all, but that’s not what bugs me. It bugs me because that’s considered to be a strongly feminist/liberal viewpoint.

Then again, these same “conservative/anti-feminist” women are what they call “pro-choice, pro-marriage equality, pro-gender equality (egalitarian), anti-gender roles…” Doesn’t this sound more like something that’s NOT conservative by political definition?

I think we should avoid framing discussions like these in the false dichotomy of liberal vs conservative.

Regardless of how you feel about it personally, women have been and will continue to terminate pregnancies one way or another for thousands of years. The only question is will it be done in a medically safe manner or with a coat hanger. I knew a girl in college that used the uneven paralell bars in the gym to do it, and may very well have ruined her ability to have wanted children in the future. Nobody ever talks about saving THOSE children.

This is a very valid human rights concern about men’s total lack of free agency in becoming a parent post coitus. Women are given that agency in almost all western nations and men are not.

If we frame it as a human rights issue, we actually have a shot at making progress, even among the very “liberals” that are the subject of the picture. The United Nations frequently recognizes secondary human rights in terms of agency and similar concepts of self determination and this is where we can make genuine progress.

I’ve seen it work first hand. I turned in a paper in a class I took on modern day slavery taught by what you would likely consider to be VERY liberal professors. The paper was about the hidden slavery of men and how by the every definition used by the U.N., non-consenting fathers are being subjected to forced labor.

I got an A on the paper.
