Lesson about the Oakland BBQ: Mind your own business

So, this came up in the news. It was spun as a racist act by a woman, calling the police on African-Americans BBQing over coals in a park. I had to dig, but the woman was technically correct in that they were using charcoal in an area for only propane, so it violated ordinances:

Well, it got spun into a case of racism, and a woman targeting African Americans. SNL made fun of it and it went on and on. It lead to mass BBQ protest, and a bunch of activism.

Only lesson I see here is, forget “if you see something say something” (well outside of maybe a bomb going off or that), mind your own damn business. There is nothing good that comes out of being civic minded at all. Let the entire thing rot. You aren’t changing anything.

She became imbedded into all sorts of memes from both the left and right.
I would just recognize her as ‘oh ya, the ‘racist’ chick on a cellphone.’
Not surprisingly there’s more to the story so thanks for sharing.

First thing I looked for in the article I read about it was the original complaint, and that was ‘you can’t bbq like that there’ which had no racist overtones, was just, you are breaking the rules.

Now it has spun out of control…

No longer can we walk away, we must run. Remove the motive power.
