I just saw a video showing LED lights on the floor, and when the guy demonstrated the lights, it looked magical. I even commented on it looking magical.

    This is a pretty cool.

I’ve actually been playing around with LED strip lighting lately. I installed some over my kitchen cabinets, under the cabinets, and along the ceiling in my kids rooms.

The strips are pretty cheap. You can get 15 feet for around $20 including the power supply, controller, and remote. It looks like he’s using two strips together. He got the strips with the ‘meteor shower’ feature. He spliced them in half. Definitely using 2 controllers. Although their are 4 ‘lines’, 2 lines are always in sync….doing the exact same thing. The wires he’s using to connect the strips to each other and power supply are also pretty standard. I haven’t messed with that, mostly because I’m not too comfortable with soldering.

Those aluminum channels are kind of pricy. The do a good job of protecting the strip and defusing the light.

He didn’t really show what he did for power supply. He probably could have just use two separate power supplies like normal. All that’s hidden behind the wall.

Control is really the problem with this overall. Ideally, you want to be able to control all your lights with one phone app, with the ability to group together with other automated things. It doesn’t look like you can do this yet…not without paying a fortune anyway.

I plan on setting this up around my game room next, with a ‘music controller’. It has a mic on it and will automatically switch colors, or flash on and off, based on a loud noise like a clap, gun fire, or deep base. In testing, it works really well when playing a video game.

    Ok. Then do it.

That’s awesome! Really shows how much of an opportunity there is to modernize a home for pretty cheap, considering how much modification you can do.

Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve always loved colorful lights. That’s why my dad took me to Vegas when I was 13, and why I like Christmas. I like to string LED lights like the ones in the video along the edges of my ceiling to give it a futuristic sci-fi look. The only LED lights I have in my room are my LED monitor screen and 4 Star Wars FX lightsabers.

Looking at the floor in the video, that looks magical. Something out of a futuristic sci-fi movie.

You might be surprised. There are daisy chainable RGB LEDs at a bulk price of about 50¢ each. Connect an arduino with a bluetooth link, write some code for your phone to talk to it, and you’re in business.
