Possibly the most important factor for a generation of undersaving Americans, Stevens said, is in many places “a retiree can live comfortably for less than $2,000 a month.”

Kathleen Peddicord, 55, who took the plunge 20 years ago with her husband, is the author of “How to Retire Overseas: Everything You Need to Know to Live Well (for Less) Abroad.” She said the most tax efficient countries for Americans living abroad are Panama, Belize, Uruguay and Malaysia.

“The positions of these countries on taxing is about as good as it gets. In these four countries, you pay tax on only what you earn in the country. Earn no income within the country, and you pay no tax in the country,”

———Of course it is central and south america, which has its own set of problems,…then again daily we talk about the problems here in the states. I have given a lot of thought to Belize, and just might do it when the time comes.

I do not see Belize as long term solution. There is to many large political s~~~storms happening in the neighboring nations.

It is likely the only reason Belize has not been effected is its ties to western powers. But, as the western powers decline that umbrella of possible protection is declining.

Given that living in the U.S.A. is costing more and more each year, having information like this is of value … Thanks for sharing.

Especially if your individual savings were wiped out in 2008-2010, you need options that can be achieved with the savings you are able to obtain in your remaining employment years.

It works the same in the US too. People live in California for 20 years, cash out their house and move somewhere cheaper where they can pay cash and still have a bunch left over. It eventually drives prices up and p~~~es off the locals.

My long standing plan is to retire in Panama. I have done the research and it will be glorious. I have no doubt that it will happen. It’s the only thing that makes sense.

Anyway communication, real open communication, is not wanted or even required in a relationship. Women cannot handle fully open and honest communication, plus most perceive it as a weakness on the part of a man. All that is required is catering to her whims, and even then nothing is certain. There is no way to be sure of having a successful relationshit with a woman. MGTaoist

I think Panama is about the only country on that list i would consider. You move to these lesser economically stable countries and medical care could be an issue as could militias, civil wars or any number of other things. Ya it costs a lot relatively speaking to live in the US but you’re getting reasonable stability and safety out of it.

I think I’d pick Uruguay. I’ve heard it’s more politically stable than the others.

Just find a good sized expat community in any one of the listed Panama, Belize, Uruguay and Malaysia.

This was my plan…only I want to hopefully do it by 40 because I can rather than in my 60s because its the only way I won’t have to eat cat food in retirement.

I just figured I’d get an apartment and consider where ever I go an extended vacation. That way you aren’t stuck if you get sick of the place or you have concerns of the areas stability. If I ever bought in a foreign country, if their laws even allow, it would only be after I spent a few years there and decided that was definitely the place for me.

I said it here a few times over the years, and that is that I am out of here after caring for my parents is done. Not sure where I will be going yet…

I have tentative plans to retire to Belize or the Philippines, mainly because they speak English in both places and currently don’t mind having American men there.

I have learned that, in most cases, when you go to the more rural parts of just about any country, you are more welcome and shielded from the crime and violence you hear about in those places.

That is all subject to the changing winds of politics and criminals.

Funny. I said politics and criminals in the same sentence.

I’m learning that there are lots of places in Central and South America, as well as other places in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, but the social climate seems to change quickly everywhere.

I plan to take extended low-budget vacations in several places until I find a place or two that feels like home.

Don’t burn bridges or give up your citizenship in your own western country just to save on taxes (Americans). You will need a safe haven if things get weird in your current version of paradise.
