I see what corrodes this site also hampers our mission. I loved this place. A lot. And now I saw it going downhill and started to observe who is behind this: Why are top people leaving. All of this reducing our mission readiness.

At some point we have to decide if we are going to put the infighting behind us or not. I agree that something went wrong. But is this place not worth saving, particularly when some of the more troublesome members are now gone or quiet?

I have been thinking about saying this for some time and I think I might as well, so here goes;

I think a lot of the real sickness has been Keymaster’s absence. Discipline has been absent or slow (and sometimes even if discipline is unfair it is still better to have it than anarchy). However the worst thing about Keymaster’s absence has been the slow reaction to people’s requests for services they are paying for (particularly cancellation of subscriptions). When this is followed by the occasional post to say “all OK here guys, nothing to see, all will be fine in a couple of days” it will engender anger when actually it is not all OK and the problems remains. It is better to give realistic time horizons that will make people unhappy than unrealistic ones that will make people angry when they are not kept. The lock out crisis was a good example. instead of “Its all going to be fine, nothing to worry about” it would have been better to say “We have a problem gents. I am sorry. I can’t identify what it is. I will fix this ASAP” or even “I will fix this next week because I am sorry I do not have time this week” is better than “Its all fine, don’t worry”.

I am starting to worry that this website is in danger of being a zombie business. Some of the best clients have left on service issues and the business owner is absent. A critical threshold will soon be reached when income (and public interest) fall to the point where KM is not bothered to put more effort in.

If I were Keymaster I would look into delegation. If Keymaster does not put more into this place it will just fade. The recent infighting has not made it easy to think who could be delegated to when many long term members went a bit psycho recently. However KM needs to look at this as a business (whether profitable or not). I know this site is more of a labour of love than a business but it will grow and succeed or fade and fail in just the same way as any business. If KM does not have the time for it personally, it will fail unless he gets someone else who shares some of his passion to do the work.

On the farm there is no fertiliser that works as effectively as the boss’ footprint on the land. I think this is true for this website too. If the boss is not about, an estate manager should be.

I know I am KM’s guest and this place is great. I do not want to be rude to my host but I do love this place of his and I see it heading in a bad direction because of his absence and I might was well say something.

I agree with this but no one can be trusted. Power corrupts. Say that you were given that power. Even you would end up being unfair or having to ban someone who shouldn’t have been banned. He has spoken about this before and has said that its better to just have free reign. I think some sort of park ranger should have the ability to, for example: put you in time-out for hours on end, without the ability to post. Perhaps 10 strikes and you get shut out for a week… I dont know.

The thing that bothers me the most is that we’re not open for new people right now. New men can’t sign up and talk with us. This should be alarming for us. That is untenable in my opinion. The subscriptions are trivial. I think he did that, perhaps even to keep the numbers low while he was still considering improvements. To keep people out, dissuade them from joining so he could still keep an eye on things and keep building. He obviously isnt worried about it. He doesn’t get hung up on the politics of all this. But, I have full faith in KM. When he does speak, he tends to over-deliver. I like that guy. I think this site is going to be up and running soon. 🙂 Maybe even with an admin person armed with limited authority who can at least keep the peace a little (not that we need one though because its not that bad).

But this thread though, should have been litter boxed 5 pages ago. Same with many other threads of late.

Gravel Pit, I agree with what you have said. A park ranger or two with the ability to put people in a short time out might be all that would be required. Something like a proper warning, 12 hours time out, 24 hours time out for a reoffence, then refer it to KM if it persists. If the ranger abuses his power he loses his privilege -a sort of school prefect. (Its OK I was not volunteering I am too junior). Also a prefect could temporarily close threads like this that abuse KM, abuse the site or repeatedly and unapologetically abuse a member beyond what appears to be fair criticism. KM could always restore them later on appeal if he wished.

I think that “set and forget” is fine as a model. It is possible to survive without discipline. I agree it is not like it is a complex project but I think that if one does a set and forget model, one needs to avoid providing services for money unless one can automate their booking and cancellation. I think this is where the only legitimate gripes lie.

I hate the idea of advertising but it could be the solution to revenue on a set and forget model. KM deserves a revenue and I would put up with some ads if that it achieved that for him. (Maybe there is a bigger issue I don’t understand here with ads and KM’s anonymity? so I appreciate ads may not be possible)

If one is providing services for money then I think the support needed is more of an admin nature than a discipline one.

I have faith in KM’s integrity and I am grateful for his site. I personally have no complaint at all and only thanks. I just fear that while he is away and people are running about taking the p~~~ out of him, if people also get upset about legitimate financial issues, it is starting to look like attention is sorely needed. It would be a shame if a seriously good work that has really helped many men ended in a load of puerile slanders and people upset at not getting refunds.
