Just watched it for the 100th time and it is one of the best films ever made. Scary as f~~~ and has a bunch of brilliant actors – one of my favourites
Plus as a bonus no stupid mary sues to “save the day” which would be the case if this film was made now
And does that ending mean The Thing has survived? Kurt Russell gives the bottle to Childs and laughs as he drinks from it – speculation on the internet says that bottle is full of petrol and Russell laughs because he knows Childs is the Thing – I am on the fence about it but the best films end with those types of endings imo. Great stuff
This movie is pure genius. Everything from the setting, to how it looks very campy and low budget with still brilliant special effects.
The entire time you’re left guessing. Loved how ambiguous the ending was. The remake was so bad to the point where I really considered becoming a writer.

Nothing campy imo and just a great film
When films were about being great films rather than ticking boxes altho ironically it has a very diverse cast
It is the ONLY movie that is a re-make of an earlier movie that was EVER any good. Saw it in the theaters and was blown away! Got it on DVD love it.
Now as to the issue of the ending. No neither man has the thing inside them—(at least knowingly) If one of them did he would have attacked the other.
One of the things I like the most about this flick is that there are no women to f~~~ up the plot. For example it was clear from both Blair and Palmer that even infected they can still function and pretend to be normal people. Yet notice there is never any repeat any attempt to communicate/talk to/reason with/ the “thing”…If a woman had been involved in the production or as an actor THAT is certainly what would have happened. Minus a woman we get what NEEDED to happen…we don’t NEED to talk to the “thing” except to say: F~~~ you too. And really is there any pressing need to say anything else?
And to add – Keith David is one of my favourite actors for the reason that he plays The Arbitor in the Halo games!
And great post Pistol

Anonymous14One of my favorites as well along with They Live, Escape from L.A., Escape from New York, Big Trouble in Little China and Darkstar. Many have never seen Darkstar, the first full length film he ever wrote and directed. It has a great ending, super low budget, goofy comedic inflatable alien, a must see for any fan of Carpenter.
As far as the ending of The Thing I think they both know they are going to freeze to death out there so it is a moot point. If either has the Thing in them it will be a reset of sorts with it being frozen again as it was before. Not their problem at this point if someone else comes along and gets infected. NFG.
Love the fight scene in “They Live” between David Kieth and Piper. Also Prince of Darkness is a GREAT carpenter film.

I haven’t seen Prince of Darkness yet, will give it a shot.

Havent looked at it that way before – the ultimate red pill/mgtow moment…not my problem anymore so nfg. Awesome

Yeah I hadn’t thought about that way either; good point Joe.

Anonymous14Yea, they are buddies, they just survived some crazy s~~~, even if they suspect the other has the Thing in them it is not worth killing their friend which would entail burning him alive to save the next unlucky bastard that may come along in the future and uncover it as they are going to freeze to death. So they just basically say “so be it”. NFG and die together as buddies never knowing for sure.

Anonymous6John Carpenter’s Vampires with James Woods was pretty good as well.
I even liked the remake of The Thing in 2011. It’s kinda hard to mess up a movie like that.
