Always on the brink of nuclear war, we grew up with news as our main attention point in the media.

And AFN-TV was the media climax to have for a German schoolboy.

That’s how and why I learned to build big UHF TV antenna arrays from junk parts. And there was only one special place on our land where the picture came in quite acceptably. Picking up the ground wave from the Channel 22 transmitter on Rhein-Main Air Base. (Now the feminists know in which radius to send the 50 MT nuke to get rid of me)

I had a huge 30 dB remote fed amplifier on that thing. And 30 meters of cable…

That’s the sort of thing I need to be learning. Nowadays the only ground waves you will be picking up are from Cell Phone Masts.

You can still TV-DX but you have to build your own notch filters to get rid of LTE and GSM “blockbuster” signals.

DVB-T and ATSC is a wonderful DX-media. If you make it over the BER line then you have a crystal clear picture.

Same with DAB in Europe.

This is something like it.

I have built such things in the 90’s to DX on police radio. Cologne was the furthest I got. BOS Channel 356… LOL.
