I’ve seen first hand how disasters on a local/regional scale play out and its not pretty for either gender. Humans will literally do anything to save themselves and/or their children. Good men will kill if their child is starving. Women will suck dick at the drop of a dime for a bottle of water.
Immediately after Sandy, three other technical consultants and I rented RVs and set up shop at a Wal-Mart parking lot on Long Island. There were few locations with potable water or electricity and most hotels that were functional were full, so the RVs served as mobile offices/living spaces for us. We’d drive out to the various loss locations, do our inspections, try to figure out how to help these people get back on their feet, and then circle the wagons back at the parking lot at the end of the day. Normally we have to give the insurance companies budgets for the work. For this, we had adjusters just calling, giving us an address, and telling us to do what we had to do. No contracts or paperwork up front at all.
Cops came by to check on us all the time. We’d advised them of our locations and offered to help where possible, each of us being ex-military. We were all armed, the cops knew it, and not a single f~~~ was given by a man in blue. In NYC (and the outer boroughs), one of the worst gun-law cities in this country.
During the week and a half we spent living like that, we relocated 4 times due to individuals and families (with their children) trying to break into the RVs and take what we had. I literally had women begging me to let them sleep in the RV overnight. Men with tears in their eyes begged me for bottles of water for their kids or to let them watch their favorite DVDs in the RV. I have pictures in one of my cameras. I’ll try to dig some up.
It was 3rd world apocalyptic. Not due to the damages to buildings (there was plenty, to be sure), but due to the lack of electricity, empty store shelves, and collective fear (that gave way to anger). To be clear, this wasn’t a post-Tsunami disaster or mega-earthquake disaster. Only 11 people died. You could walk out of town. You could find food and water if you left your neighborhood. There were pockets/neighborhoods where the electricity was on.
It was the hype by the media that made it sound like huge swaths of NY and NJ were just gone. That and the sheer mess the storm left (salty-mud waist deep in one public library I had to inspect).
So for some, I could see the appeal of an event that “forces women to need men again”. But that’s not the kind of need I’d like directed at me. It was utterly desperate, horrified, emotionally crippled need driven by fear. At this was only a brief period outside of one of the country’s most metropolitan areas with aid workers and volunteers pouring in.
You know what it reminded me of? A life-long heroin addict who thinks you’ve got their next hit.
